In short, yes, but the chemicals are more expensive than producing/buying new resin.
From what I understand, dishwashers uses resin and renews it with the salt you put in the machine. But it's something about the dishwasher only removing half of the contamination, compared to us needing it all gone.
We took a dishwasher apart one time, and it had a huge resin system on the entire side of the machine.
