Help Support WCF:

What do the stubborn marks consist of?

You could try the infamous potato cut in half

The glass will have a data sheet with which cleaning products are safe to use. I use fairy on them (listed on the sheet for Pilkington) and a sponge with a lot of elbow grease for a first clean but as the glass Surface is porous it gets ingrained dirt and can be very stubborn to clean. The self cleaning coating only works on organic things. Any mineral deposits don't get broken down. The coating (titanium dioxide I think) is fairly delicate. So much so that they don't recommend using a squeegee even to avoid scratches. It's a specialist job so make sure they know that and pay according. On a first clean with self clean I even put up tower scaffolding sometimes.

Pilkington Activ comes with a notifying label stuck on it when it's delivered and cleaning instructions are given to the owner so they should know.

It comes in tinted blue and clear so you can't go by the colour alone.

The water should sheet off as opposed to rivulets

How can you tell if it's self cleaning?? Blue tint? Super hydrophobic?
super hydrophilic actually, once you've got them upto a good standard it's dead easy to clean them. Slight tint but even the clear ones have a very slight fog which can be seen mainly from the insides in direct sunlight but you can usually read which glass it is at the edge strip between the panes. As Spartan says above the customer will know. They'll have paid so much for them it'll be seared on their memory! /emoticons/wink.png

The cleaning shedule for sgg bioclean glass reads

• Cleaning products:

  • - Clean water will normally suffice. Standard, mild glass-cleaning products

can also be used (visit www.conservatory-glass.com to view our list of

    recommended cleaning products).

  • - ‘Soft’ water is best for cleaning glass. In hard-water areas a small amount

of washing-up liquid can be used to soften water.

  • - For the removal of stubborn marks white vinegar can be used. Always

ensure that the vinegar does not come into contact with the frame and that

it is washed off the glass after application.

  • - Vinegar is not to be used as a regular cleaning method.

Fairy washing up liquid wouldn't have been on the list surely its to harsh , Ecover washing up liquid used to be on the list as its more eco friendly product so nasties in it I couldn't access the list last time i had a look .

It's funny actually, on the pilkinton website it doesn't mention fairy, but on the manual that came with the glass it does. I wonder if they've removed it from the list since their glass was fitted.

Pub beside me has "self cleaning glass". I canvassed it and landlord said "don't need a window cleaner, got self cleaning glass."

They were filthy so I replied "how often do they clean themselves because it looks like they are due"

I never got that job.
