Hi
I've just returned to window cleaning after being out of the business over ten years. Has anyone any advise for the best method finding new customers. Does cold canvassing still work. Thanks in advance

It’s canvassing, I hate canvassing but it’s by far the fastest way to build up work. Plus they’ve got your card and know your face. I’ve had some say they weren’t interested and then come back a year later having kept my card and turned into some of my best customers

Knocking doors is always the best way to get a good round. If they like your face and you have a smile and do not be to pushy, it works. My pitch is. Hi my name is .......... i am wondering if you need a window cleaner. If they are not sure, say do you want me to give you a quick price. Always works. Then friends tell friends family tells family. In no time at all you will have loads of work.

which ever way you decide to build your biz count on doing triple the marketing you had in mind.If you thought of knocking on 100 doors itll need 300 and then some... i built my own round on flyers , i know several windies who put out 2.5 k of pro flyers and got not even 1 call. I put out about 10k each Spring ,,,for 5 yrs running .I also know of a local house cleaner who has a parttime leafletter working for her year round

This is why face to face door knocking is much better the pick up rates are much higher , any flyers that come through my letterbox go straight in the bin don’t even look at them , regardless of what they are .

I’ve gone down the cards route for that exact reason. Any flyer that comes through my door I bin it. I’m hoping, if I have to put it through the letter box because they’re not in, a card might seem more personal and less likely to chuck it. That said. I’ve only had one person come back after finding my card out of the thousands I’ve dished out.

It’s always worth trying to speak to people when I was building I found speaking to ones got a very good response as they saw you and you could build up a rapport with them , that’s how trust starts especially if you live close by .

Over the last 2 days I have dropped about 500 leaflets. Had 1 call which led to a new job plus her mum wants a windy, just round the corner that I hadn't leafletted yet, so 2 jobs. 1 more text today, converted to a job and a fourth who was scarifying his garden - I managed to spark up conversation, then ask if he needed a windy :) He said he did the windows ( bungalow) I asked if I could replace him, just for windows not lawn care :) Few mins later another custy whose wife came back and when he introduced me she was over the moon as she said he never cleaned them:)
Hopefully another call or 2 over the next few days.

I did drop some leaflets then canvass the next day but they either had a windy, or didn't want one plus a fair few had to come to the door with zimmer frames so I decided not to canvass in that area.

Also had 2 enquiries via Google this week, first one I can't do as huge extension with lanterns and 3rd floor dormer - I don't do ladders so no way to do 2nd floor, 3rd or lanterns. Second I thought was going to convert but it was the son at elderly mums house, he was fine with price but I guess mum wasn't so keen as they didn't get back to me.

Overall not too bad a start to Spring.

My best advice is to have a really easy sign-up process.

Set prices work best, a really good landing page and some well set up Google and Facebook ads.

For example, since Saturday, I've had 9 bookings, worth £449 in total and added £954 per year to my round (I only offer 2 monthly window cleaning). Only one of them required me to phone them up to give a quote, the rest booked online through my landing page / instant quote form.

If you need help figuring out where to start just drop me a message.

Surely this only works if you have a very good ranking website to funnel the visitors to the landing page? A great landing page can only work IF you get visitors to it. If you have the best landing page in the world and zero visitors you are going to have zero conversions!
I'm not having a go at your business, just trying to inform people that they also need to focus on seo to gain visitors - unless they want to pay for Google ads or the equivalent ads on social platforms.

It might be worth you offering a SEO service or managed ads service to compliment your landing page and automated pricing system.

Absolutely right, you NEED a constant flow of traffic. SEO takes a very long time these days to achieve anything noticeable, and paid ads are definitely the way forwards to be able to get in front of more people, but there isn't any point just taking them to the home page anymore, people want the information as soon as they click.

Being totally honest, I only use paid ads. I've neglected my SEO completely, I don't even show on organic listings on the first page of Google in my area and speaking with other businesses that are top, it just doesn't have the same impact that it used to. The best thing you can do instead is get reviews and optimise your Google My Business page with new content every few days. Being in the three pack at the top has a much bigger impact I find.

Offering SEO or Ads is something that interests me, I'd always suggest finding someone who specialises in external cleaning ads to compliment what my system does.

One thing people don't have confidence with is creating set prices, and honestly, I'd be more than happy to help anyone (totally free of charge) because it is a total game changer when you're trying to grow.
