Can't connect an x hose to normal hose

When you connect a normal hose to the outlet they sometimes leak for a few seconds at the connections. That is until the pressure builds up in the hose and the connectors seal themselves. Your xhose if not fully extended and pressurised may not seal at the connectors properly.

What I did was to fit a female water stopping connector on the end of the xhose, turn the water supply on until it was fully extended, them connect my normal hose to it. Worked fine after that.

I think one of the problems is too many hozelock connections, it was leaking like hell in the photo above, but when I connected to one less it flowed better, but still pretty slow. It didn't seem to expand much either and when I connected it to another hosepipe like below it was leaking. Can you use PTF tape or by a better double male connector or something to stop this?

Why didn't it expand?
