We've hired a painter to emulsion all of the interior walls in our house. He gave his price and we accepted it. Tomorrow he will be finished. He has added £20 for masking tape and filler. I've questioned this with him as surely they are tools he needs to do his job? I stated that I don't turn up at customers houses and ask for water, ladders and soap as they are my tools for the job. He said he'd knock the £20 off, but this has left the relationship a bit sour.

On a side note, on his first day he turned up and asked if we had bought masking tape. If I was doing the job I wouldn't need masking tape as I think I have a steady hand. It never occurred to me to think I should have to buy any. On that day he decided to go home and get some tape and start the next day. Do you think he's mugging me off?

Thats like not expecting a brickie to not include the mortar in his price. Its pretty standard for a painter to charge for masking tape. They normally include long term consumables like brushes and rollers in with their price unless a specialist part is required for your job!

I don't quite understand what you're saying. He gave a price and now at the end of the job he wants £20 more for masking tape. Surely he would have included this in his original price?

I'd think his price would be including materials

If I turned up to do a drive the quote I give includes all the materials ill need to do the job

Wouldn't say at end off it,you owe another 50 for sand and weed killer as I personally think it would mean my original quote was misleading

But that being said, for sale of £20 quid if he's done a good job is it worth it?probly gave him little extra anyway

I think the only problem is he didnt tell you before.

I would just pay him the £20 but advise him he should probably be upfront in future to prevent issues.

Go to Poundland and buy him a few rolls of masking tape and knock the £20 off.

Landlord just had our place done. When painter came to quote the first question he asked him was 'Are you going to buy the materials or am I?'

I have done a few odd painting jobs and the price quoted includes all consumables.

I always include materials in all quotes when painting unless the custy wants a specific colour then I will knock off the price and they will supply the paint.

It can be funny when you mention it especially if I'm in a funny mood and say about the last custy who wanted polka dot paint but they couldn't find it!! :rof:
