If I lose my job and go self employed, can I get housing benefit and tax credits when I start out? I will be making such little money. Wondered if this was the best way to survive? Also, do savings affect how much tax credits you can claim?

personally id go find work ,the doorknockin with a VVVVVengeance . if you do it right you will rake in more than any benefits. time spent on doin it is worthwhile long term too

1/ Why do you say this?
2/ I may not be able to stop myself getting fired anyway. (I am working reasonably hard.)
If this was replying to me, 1) because it calculates benefit entitlement. 2) if you can keep a day or two of your old type work it will give you survival money while you build the round. Say you currently work in a shop 5 days a week, drop to 2 - 3

Yes you can.

Working family tax credit

Child benefit

Council tax relief

Housing benefit

Child tax credit

Go to entitledto.gov and play with the figures.

Savings will affect all of these benefits apart from child benefit.
