@boarcity coming from a man that familiar with the woes and aggrevation of employees you cant always blame the bosses.

Our culture has made it too easy to do a poor job and take the mickey knowing worse case if you get fired upu can go get benefits.

Sometimes no matter what you do for an employee it will never be enough.

Hardest part of building any business is finding good employees

I've been down a similar road a lot, my trick is to not let them back out until they commit to a full day, I then go out with them and march them hard from 11-7. We leap frog from door to door , no nipping down a side street for them, I'm on them like butter on toast. If they pull a decent result ( should do ) really praise them, big them up, If they do badly generally they will never answer the phone to you again.

@Whizz\-Bizz the difference is you are a canvassing company. I cant stand there holding hands, i have windows to be cleaning.

Canvassing is harder than cleaning windows in many respects. Its a shame things have gone south with Jade, and now might every well be a good time to rethink things. Why do you think it hasent worked out with Jade? is it because she just turned out to be a waster or is there some other underlying reason, did you give her enough coaching/mentoring, or were you too busy on the glass? by the sounds of it she was from the youngest age range to work so maybe just not mature enough for this type of job and eventually too many knock backs wore her down. Clearly you are a quality canvasser by the sound of things but any successful business needs to have a well balanced range of talent in the 3 core areas (Sales/Marketing, Ops/devliery/fulfilment and accounts/finance). If you priority is building the customer based, then put your best man in the canvassing role for now, but if you really want to grow the business you will need to be able to stand back from canvassing every so often to allow you to keep an eye on developing other parts of the business.

just some thoughts...

Can't you get someone who does a mixture of Windows and canvassing for you especially if you only have a part time canvasser and don't quite have enough to fill up a full week for someone on the Windows. Might keep them from getting bored plus they will be able to spot the obsticals that someone who doesn't actually clean...little things like tall bushes in front of glass....dog poop...side access problems and then factor them into the price.

The life span of a canvasser in any sales industry is 21 days, they generally start out all peachy keen and do alright, then the constant rejections can hit some people hard. I've had a guy pester me since October for a job he insisted he meet me the other night, kept me for 4 hours yes yes yes see you tomorrow, no show. The old saying people get on and off the bus but them wheels keep turning is what keeps me going

Been there done that Roy. It's come to a head and thats that.

If i hire another lad for this van then i have the responsibility to find him the work so that will be the push to get out and knock doors.

Don't take this the wrong way Green but you strike me as an elder statesman of window cleaning with a lot of work, do you really need to canvas? or do you really enjoy the buzz of getting new work? I suppose I don't know your targets, but personally can't stand the idea of having to knock on anymore doors, I'd rather bump up my advertising 200% a year and let them come to me.

Oi!! Less of the Statesman!!

I appreciate the compliment but I am pretty much still a nooob by comparison to some of the veterans on here as i only have a decade in the game. As for targets? Well our target is the Midlands, no not the Midlands Building Society, but The Midlands. Looking to add the next van this week hopefully. Currently we estimate we will have to VAT register before the year is out. As I am looking at an additional £16K on my tax bill this year I need to haul in a shed load more to off set such a hit.

FYI, Jade has returned however she has asked to come back on a commission only basis, with the agreement that she does not collect that commission until the first clean has been done, the customer spoken to and everybody being happy. We have also retained the services of a very well know canvassing company that targets commercial work only.

As I have stated in another thread I believe we are entering the golden age of window cleaning and I, for one, intend to take my slice.

Thanks for replying green, it's great to get an insight into where your targets are, I guess I just hate canvassing lol. Do you and peter rogers work together or something? I do reckon there's is a lot to be said for getting new customers to keep thing fresh, can be so boring going over the same old routes. did I read that you just sold a sat round or was that someone else?

Aggregation of business act. Opening multiple companies in the same game will not help you dodge VAT. The gov will simply decide you are one and same business and smack you with a massive bill.

Do you and peter rogers work together or something?

No mate. Couldn't work with Peter, we don't speak the same language. I speak English.

Although he did once threaten to pop over and buy me a pint.. still waiting.

Well ive let the guy/guys i was using go as they just didnt listen to what i wanted when left alone working for commission only.

The lad i had we did 2 days together, 3 hours per day and picked up 8 custies, wasnt great but i was more than happy. we were writing everything down who said no etc and i showed him how i price and what questions to ask on the door.

He then said he didnt really have time to work when i was so can he do commission only at 1x and he would get his mate to help. I didnt like his mate from the off was a bit cocky especially when he rang me asking if i can trad a house for £8. i sadi no wfp only, he said youve got ladders and started being a bit funny. I told him no i dont trad end of story. Then they got me a couple of jobs with no contact numbers and hadnt expleined anything to them. He kept calling me from a private number which i dont answer and told him so yet he still did it so im wondering whats he tryna hide (the mate). Anyway he then got me a job for £7, i told him my absoloute lowest is £8 for a terraced, he argued it only had 7 windows, told him i dont care if its got one please do as i asked.

Anyway few days went by and heard nothing so i text the guy and said if u still want to do it we have to meet up to go over how i want ot done otherwise theres no point.

Long story lol but never heard back. Moral is i would keep an eye on any future canvasser.

Ive been off work this week as my Gf is in hospital but ill be back adverising for another next week, but i think to be honest ill just do it myself at least until i have a full round and its more hassle than its worth.
