Google and others want to make the internet more secure. There are believed to be a few reasons, obviously a more secure internet is always welcome. It's also believed that it's a response to FBI snooping as well as a bit of a PR stunt.

Whatever the reason it's good but not a game changer at this stage. Essentially your site and others I host are secured with https now meaning customers who visit your site won't get a NOT SECURE warning on the site which might turn some users off visiting.

Any websites in the near future that don't use https and instead use http will likely have more clear warnings shown to users that a site is not secure. The issue is it doesn't nesisarily mean a site is malicious or spammy infact there are millions of sires that still use http. But as warnings are shown more prominently to visitors it might turn people off visiting.

Google also alluded to the fact that using https will be a ranking factor in there search engine results. How much of a difference this will make remains to be seen and won likely give any huge benefits.
