Hi all,

We're experienced waterfed pole window cleaners and are starting to do roof cleaning as customers are requesting it.

We just wanted to know what products we should use and what safety measures we should put in place in regard to the chemicals.  Also, how do you have certainty on whether the roof tiles have asbestos in them?

 Thanks so much!

Jo

Roof cleaning is specialist work , you really need to have professional training on how to do it safely it’s totaly different  to cleaning windows you need to understand the working at height regs , have and know how to use fall arrest equipment , keep records of inspections of equipment test procedures etc and and have in place systems of how you will lower someone down who has had a fall . These things will all be asked for by the hse if ever you are involved in an accident and if not in place it’s a heafty fine

if you intend using mewps or cherry pickers you will need Piaf licence

unless you are going to go into it in a big way it may be best to sub it out to a professional in that field and maybe they could recomend you for window cleaning ? Just a thought

I looked into this. When I found that sometimes the moss actually keeps the roof water resistant I decided not to bother. My uncle was a roofer for 20 years, one fall and the poor sod couldn't move for months. That was nearly 20 years ago and he still has days he can't move because of the pain.

Roof cleaning is so specialist so I won’t touch it, if it can’t be cleaned from the safety of the ground then I won’t touch it.

Too many thing that can go wrong.

What you want to know can not and will not be learnt from information you gather up on Google.

I quit roof cleaning as it's too much of a PITA.

You are better off to refer the customer to a professional and ask for a 'finders fee'

Phone your liability insurance broker and ask what your premium will be for such a dangerous job with zero experience.
