Tappet screws to secure downpipe brackets

installing downpipe  brackets onto van  interior roof  rail.    Im always getting wrong size.    any idea as to what size ill need.      after drilling pilot holes   Need to secure downpipe for 2 poles

The pilot hole should be a little smaller than the root diameter of the self tapper. The root diameter is the solid shaft diameter not the outer with the thread.

As a very simple guide the pilot hole should be 1mm smaller than the self tapper outer diameter.

Have a search on google for self tapping pilot drill sizes and you will find some tables that also take in to consideration the thickness of the steel.

 
Or use self drilling screws designed for metal stud walls - screwfix stock them. 
I’ve  used metal roofing sheet screws in the past with success.
