Im fairly new to this window cleaning stuff, i only started out in October last year.

when i first started i was canvassing every day and getting good results until it started to get very cold then people became much less impressed with me knocking there door.

When is the right time to start again as i keep putting it off at the moment and just hand out business cards in the day time.

Is anyone else canvassing now? how are you getting on with it being dark and cold?

Any inspiration would be much appreciated!

I canvass every single saturday 10am til 5pm without fail. I print off maps of the surrounding areas / all the streets, and highlight them when I'm done.

Its hard work but if you wan't your business to succeed you will be rewarded in the end. Self motivation if the most important thing.

When doing this I hand out business cards to anyone who is interested or anyone I sign up.

Think being your own boss in any business, its hard to keep motivated - but I remind myself of all the benefits, no one breathing down your neck, etc etc, I dont think I could go back to working for somebody else.

+1 for that Catherine, I couldn't work for anyone else now!

Wish the government would invest a little money into new businesses - that would be a great help. Help new business, because they are going to be the employers in the future. Bit of financial incentive would be good for people starting up

I think that one reason the recession is not effecting the Window Cleaning Trade is that people cannot afford to go out and get drunk anymore. So, they stay at home more and notice them windows need cleaning. people are happy to part with £7, £8, £9, £10 to have home looking clean and tidy... and people also want tradition... A good old window cleaner!!!... Like a Posty, Milkman or Dusty...

Yeh +1 for this. People are staying at home and watching tv more, not going out and splashing the cash. probs the main reason why we're not getting hit by the recession as much as the other trades, but as always, people need their windows cleaning!

other thing to consider is that the % of people out of work is, for arguments sake let's say 10. half of them were already in that state before the recession, and, unless you're in a town which is the equivalent to a pit village where everyone works at the same place, our custies have diverse careers, so the crunch won't necessarily affect that many custies that severely.

That is a good factor to consider. Another factor to consider is that some people have lots of motivation and some just lack it. Entrepreneurs out there just have self drive every single hour of the day. They just want to achieve endless limits while others just have 1% of what they do, do minimul amount of work and hope for the best. You have to keep telling yourself to work harder, push yourself faster and keep working at it. In the end it will pay off!
