here in Gateshead we have "no cold calling zones" these are set up by Gateshead council,Northumbria Police and the local housing company in an attempt to reduce doorstep crime, such as burglary, bogus callers and rogue traders, and improve local residents’ confidence in how to handle such situations. These areas are oap bungalows and sheltered housing, the areas targeted by these a******es:turd:.The Police can ask you to stop cold calling and leave the area. Why not just post some leaflets then the problems solved then everybody's happy:D

**** the police.

Firstly ask them what law you are breaking? I've done this many times in many situations and generally they don't know.

If they threaten you with trespass, tell them it's a civil matter.

I would just ignore them and carry on. Don't be intimidated, you have the right to earn an honest living.

Good luck!

they altered the law recently and I believe it is an offence if the house displays a visible no cold call sign..the martin lewis web site had the page to download and print off....it came about because of the deregulation ot the power companies and the many pushy sales people that followed...

so if you see the sign dont knock if you dont knock away.../emoticons/biggrin.png

Thanks everyone for the advice i am justing starting out i have some windows on i got the trolley system and i need a 30ft pole can any one help thanks

I might get another set of cards printed for the mobile phobics. I wouldn't mind giving folk my details, if I know who they are first. I wouldn't put them on the general public ones I've got in shop windows, just incase.

Jambo, remember to not carry your cards in a bag marked 'swag' next time ;-)

Just been pulled off the police for cold calling how do get more work on thanks
Firstly there is no offence committed by knocking on doors, unless there is a sign on the door saying 'no cold callers' if there is you commit a criminal offence under this legislation, The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008. (Aggressive Commercial Practices)

There are a number of No Cold Calling Zones in Exeter and East Devon. The above legislation applies.

Other areas

However, if you are knocking on doors in an area that is an area where vulnerable people may live such a the elderly or sheltered housing for disabled there will be concern. If the police receive a report that a suspicious person is knocking on doors a police unit will be sent to determine who is knocking and what they want. This will be done in the interest of 'preventing crime'. The police action will depend on what was said at the time of the report being made the call handlers, as the callers perception is taken into account. If the callers says 'There is a fella knocking on doors, thought you should know' The officers would normally just stop and check, request details for a police national computer check and if you are not 'wanted' they would go. If the caller says 'There is a man knocking on my neighbours doors and I am scared he will come to me' the call handler will advise that 'caller is in fear'. Officers would normally carry out a 'stop and check' if you are not wanted, you would be requested to leave the area. You are not being told to leave for door knocking, but because someone has felt unsafe. You may have done nothing but if there is a perception that you may do something it will cause fear.

If you refuse to leave, the Common Law power of 'to prevent a breach of the peace' can be used giving the officer lawful power to remove you.

I hopes this helps.

I get stopped about 3 times a year by the police, but Ive never been moved on, Ive been chased down by private security on a restricted / private roads before also. Those guys I just said I was collecting out standing payments and off they went. But generally with the police I let them take my details and tell them to google my number to show Im legit.

The only reason they should ask you too move on is if your too pushy or insisting on getting into the houses, other than that never had an issue personally

This is true but not the only reason you can be moved on. Like I said above, the callers perception plays a part as does the police officer's discretion.
I have moved two guys from a housing estate because after checking them on the police national computer one had a 'previous' offence maker for burglary. He was probably there canvassing as he said but I decided there were two many elderly people living there who I considered to be vulnerable.

you need signs on your car/ van

i believe it should be illegal to operate undercover in an unmarked vehicle ,in any trade

Have you got a link for police national computer, and is it free ?
No Mr W, the police national computer or PNC is the police intelligence data base and can only be accessed by police staff via computer. When checking a person on the street you pass the details via your radio to a control room operator who checks the system for you.

and also...if mr policeman thinks he can get away with checking for the wrong reasons....many have found out you cant.../emoticons/biggrin.png

everytime you use it its logged and can be checked at any time....me loves big brother...

Boarcity has a great point, if it was law to be sign written, that would thin the herd a bit and make more room for the genuine guys

Very true Mr C, many have fallen by the wayside for misuse of the system. I have checked a vrm on the motorway and then had an audit three months later asking why. So if you kept no record you were in the brown sticky stuff.

I did want to be a policeman or a postman....I got the job as a postman but lost it before I started as they could find no record of my previous employment....naughty daddy..

as for the police my eyesight is bad really bad minus ten...

I have never knocked a door as my mo is to hide away from peoples as they talk to me too much...

but leaflets are great...and so as I delivered my 500 magazines locally on friday I found I had none left....so off to order now..

i am lucky as being out in the middle of nowhere nobody calls here.../emoticons/biggrin.png.
