Hey, I've been using this forum for a while now as it is a great source of knowledge and friendliness and so for that I say a big thank you to you all. I thought I would finally bite the bullet and sign up and share with you the experiences of my first full day of work...
So I turn up to my first job at 9am, we are walking around and having a chat and the customer asks me to remove a clump of grass from the gutter. No problem I said, I'll do you a favour, it will only take a minute as it was on a bungalow.
However to get down the side alley that I was in I had to go through a garage and through a gate on the other side of the garden. My ladder is all the way strapped to the inside of my van outside the front of the bungalow. Right next to me is a customers step ladder, an old metal framed one with wooden steps. May as well use this one I thought. Went up, got the clump of grass out, but to check the rest of the gutters were clean, for some reason I went to the top step. Gutters were all clear. As I turned around and walked back down facing forwards, the second step from the top melted away into nothing.
I came crashing down face first. It was so sudden and unexpected, my only reaction was to move the trowel in my hand away from my chest, the other arm fell on to the edge of a concrete block. Went to the hospital. Broken elbow. Out of work for 6-8 weeks. Moral of the story - never be lazy where your safety is concerned. I feel like a right plonker!
