............. along with numerous other stuff that stayed imperial. Miles instead of kilometres, etc.
My belief re miles vs km is that would cost gov to change so they didn't. Whereas the change to selling fruit, veg etc from pounds to kg was done as gov didn't have to pay for new scales etc.

Timber sizes still seem to be imperial too - well they list it as metric but 50mm x 25mm so 2" x 1" 2240mm x 1220mm aka 8ft x 4ft.

I must admit when measuring things I use metric and imperial depending on the size or if 1 measurement is easier on a tape measure ? Even though I was only taught metric at school!

I'm surprised the motor manufacturers didn't lobby the government to change to kilometers. In the early days of the Union of South Africa, 100000 miles was the time a car really lost its resale value. After independence the country went to kilometers and cars really started to lose trade in value at 100,000kms, 38000 miles sooner.
