Gardiner Universal brush - which bristles?

WCF

Help Support WCF:

Hi, I've just been on Gardiners with the intention of trying the universal brush with stiff bristles but it's out of stock.

They have the medium soft bristles in stock though. Does anyone know which is better for general window cleaning? Is it worth waiting for the stiff bristles one to come back in stock or buy the other?

I usually use a stiff sill brush and also a medium supreme. I don't use hot water but I do favor the stiff sill brush over the medium sill brush variation as it is harder wearing.

I presume you are referring to the Ultimate brushes.

My son prefers the stiff brushes (I don't) and his is well worn. I still have a new Supreme stiff brush in the collection which he will get next fitted to his pole.

He wears the sides of the brush head away so I expect the Supreme will be more robust for him than the Ultimate.

Isn't their a risk of scratching upvc when your using a stiff brush with cold water. I use the soft universal brush on occasions. It's very good for 1st cleans with detailed
Upvc frames and glazing bars only real issue I found is you can struggle to get the spider webs out of the top corners of frames. Which a sil brush or normal can get to with alot less effort.

My son and I work together. I've cleaned lots of windows with my soft brushes that my son has also previously cleaned with his stiff brush.

I haven't noticed any scratching or scuffing of the frames on the windows he mainly cleans.

It might be a question you could ask of the expert @Alex Gardiner. I'm sure if this was a possibility he would have issued a warning before now as to when to use and when to not use this brush.

The Ultimate stiff brush is in stock btw.

No im talking about the Universal brushes that are in the sill brush section and have whiskers on the side

I agree, I've never noticed damage to frames even on ones that I've done for years with stiff bristles

In my experience, if you have a lot of leaded windows to clean, a soft or medium soft is better as the stiff brushes a far more likely to lift the lead.  You can try different angles of attack with the brush that can reduce the effect but overall stiff bristles are more agressive on lead

It seems that not many have tried it yet so I guess I'll have to be the guineapig this time ?

I honestly like the sill brush design but found it too heavy for every day use. But that's me. We were doing an old estate home which has dozens of old wooden sash windows in a poor state of paint and full of spider webs. I was using the sill brush and felt that I would have got on with it a little better if it had 'wings' even although it was better than my Ultimate medium soft mixed brush. We seem to get this estate home every 2 years to clean.

For me that Universal brush weighs 20g more than the standard sill brush so that's a downer for me. Its a long way from the 180g Ultimate.
