using a car

a car will draw much more work [from folk on the street ] than a van ever will . because you look approachable . i used old cars the first couple of years and folk Ran across the street to find me back then .

I started with my wife's a140 merc, stuck some cheap roof racks on and went cleaning. No one cares, they just care about their windows being clean. Worry about the customer and their windows not how you get there.

If a car is just fine then why do most window cleaners have vans? Trad or not. I think a van looks more presentable..... looks like your there for the long run not just trying it out to see how it goes. Im not talking straight away, long term a nice clean sign printed van will work wonders

Yes I've had that on my first day cleaning by a short guy with little man syndrome.. I was up my ladder at the time.. I simply came down n said no n he walked away haha I like being 6ft5 n covered in tattoos. He doesn't no I'm a massive softy inside ha
On second thoughts, I think you would look a berk in that car /emoticons/biggrin.png

i drive whatever i have on the road....and i have had some well dodgy cars in the past....i will say when i went for my snooze the other day and woke up to see mr arrowsmith windowcleaner plastered all over a huge van i felt somewhat insignificant and i snuck off to park around the corner...but i dont really care as i always busy.../emoticons/smile.png

You'll always get this with other tradesmen. Everyone thinks they are better then the next man, whether its better tools, better van, more staff, more time in the job (this is the most common one IMO). Just brush them off, if they were as good as they think they are, they wouldnt be worried about another window cleaner on the scene.

The ones that want to brag about how much longer they have been doing it then you, are usually the ones that let themselves down by not cleaning frames, having a sense of entitlement towards customers, and rushing the job instead of focusing on quality. Easy pickings when you want to expand your round /emoticons/biggrin.png

Haha I do in alot of cars! Ha

Ok I've now decided who cares what I drive. I havnt got an old banger n my car is in good Nic so would look the part. it's 5door too so more room for me!. My boot happily stores my gear n lots of room left.

But yeah if I look at the bigger picture, I will get a van and have it printed up when my round is big enough!

I started out in a Renault 19 that was ten years old. Stuck a ladder and a roof rack on it and bought some functional trad gear. My next 'big' purchase was a point ladder which people appreciated because it won't lean on ledges and is kind to tiles. I kept the vehicle until I built a decent enough round that the income allowed me to buy a three year old Astra estate. The only reason I chopped that car in was because I went WFP and needed more water carrying capacity. Screw the chap who said you won't look professional. A vehicle is a means of transportation. Far more important is how you present your self. Nice manner and nice clothes. Professional work and a clean business card. If the car is clean, and tidy and rust free then it's bob on.

I would actually go one step further and say I don't see the point in getting a van if you're cleaning trad. All that expense to change cars or even run a second vehicle just because you want a van but still need a family car!? Pointless. Then you open up the back doors of your van and all that's there is a bucket and scrims! When everyone was trad most window cleaners drove round in cars. Not vans.
