Different vans have varying DPF regeneration's short and long my L200 did short regens so no issues with short runs, if your dpf light comes on you need to drive for around 20 minutes at over 2,500 revs until the light goes off, I try to avoid the dpf coming on with my current van and have done so which for me involves taking an involuntary drive down in 4th gear on fast A roads and the motorway for 20 minutes once a month.

***Touch wood*** I’ve had no DPF issues in my new van and the old one was one of the last Vivaro’s not to have a DPF installed. I often have to drive more than 15 minutes between villages. My wife’s cousin is a Taxi driver and his VW Touran had to go, a DPF clean was around £500 a time and to replace the DPF was around £2500. We had a Zafira for which you could buy an entire replacement DPF in Euro Car Parts for £450. It’s all an attempt to get rid of Diesel Vehicles! When I was growing up I remember them raving about how good diesel vehicles were ??‍♂️[emoji849]

I think you'll find a lot of people have huge problems with DPF's. Lot of vans have them taken off but that's an mot failure now.

If you're unlucky and have got a DPF, especially on older vans, you will have trouble.

As most of us do "local" work the dpf never gets cleaned and will clog up.

 
I wonder if my 04 reg  transit connect has dpf. Ive seen a load of black soot on the ground from where ive started up sometimes. Also just recently theres some mysterious battery drain, even though nothings left on.  Ive read that this can happen. What doesnt help is that all my journeys are short stop and start jobs, with now and then a journey of 8 miles perhaps. But I dont really wanna go up and down the road for the hell of it, or is that the best option?

Get it on the motorway, do about 2 junctions at around 70mph, but don’t go above 4th gear. Will give it a good clear out ?

I would think the van is too old to have been fitted with dpf filters. Before you got racing up the motorway just ask at an exhaust center.

The common rail 1.8 Tdci engine was built as part of the PSA/Ford engine venture (PSA = Hdi. Ford didn't have the technology and PSA Citroen/Peugeot who did, didn't have an engine facility big enough to keep up with engine demand. Ford had the disused Dagenham plant.) They would have had catalytic convertors though.

Ford had the 1.8Tddi engine as another option which wouldn't have worked with a dpf filter. My 2012 Peugeot Boxer 2.2 110hp has a dpf filter. The 2.2 Boxer of the same year with a 100hp motor doesn't have a dpf filter. Not all vehicles had them until 2015 when tighter emission standards came in.

In the early days, the C5 Citroen 2.2 had a dpf filter as this was the model Citroen chose to pioneer dpf filtration for the future. If you bought a C5 2.0 hdi 110 hp at the same time, it didn't have DPF.

My 04 plate Citroen Relay 2.0 hdi doesn't have a dpf filter but does have a catalytic convertor. Same as our Citroen Xsara hdi'd - none have dpf filters but all have catalytic convertors.

Vauxhall were the first to fit DPF's I believe. Because the Vivaro is made by Renault this didn't have one until it became a requirement, don't know about their other vans. They didn't start fitting them to their cars until 2006 I think? Could be wrong.

Even simpler way to check. Put your reg in on the euro car parts website and search for diesel particulate filter. If it doesn't bring one up they you ain't got one.

 
yeh on a ford forum I just looked at I think they say 2009 onwards. On another point, to do with battery drain and short journeys not charging battery up enough, I reckon regular trickle charging of the battery is just something that needs to be done. bit of a pain but there you go. Just not made to do little journeys stopping and starting I guess. The electric vans like the nissan look more the ticket for the future. Bit out my bracket for now, but be interesting to see how they depreciate and keep reliability as they age.

 
My transit is a 2017 plate and in January I have to take it to the garage for an update.

Apparantly after this, I will occasionally get a warning on my dash that the van is clearing out that filter thingy.

This is a relief as I only do short journeys and only average 5000 miles a year.

 
I bought my current transit brand new 18 months ago.
Last November a warning came up on the dashboard saying ‘oil change required’
Took it in for the work and an ‘update’.
A year on and only 5000 miles done since said work, it’s displaying it again![emoji35]
Phoned them and it’s ‘oh it’s due it’s next update. Apparently they do something to burn and clean the filter that catches the carbon [emoji849].
Don’t get me wrong, it’s the best  van I’ve ever driven, but our car (BMW) as mentioned earlier and my van, seem miles to sensitive.
Could do without the disco dashboard [emoji16]
It’s also quite likely that the light is coming on due to “oil level” fella. Diesels are notorious for burning oil. I put about a litre in our transit every 2 months or so. And there’s no oil leak i promise you.
But yes every time it goes in for a MOT, it fails on the emissions and they have to clean out the diesel particulate filter, change fuel filter etc etc. its how we drive them. They are meant for long distance motorway journeys, not short local journeys

Serves you right, should've bought a Vivaro a proper van ?
I’ve had all different kinds of vans over the years and no van can touch the drive of this new shape custom.

The turning circle defies belief.

It had it’s first proper run a couple of weeks back as my wife needed the car, so I took it down to cantabury to visit my son at his university.

Stuck it in 6th gear put my foot down to about 90mph.

It purred like a kitten and the revs were still very low.

Also to look at, a custom next to a vivaro, is like me standing next to you, beauty and the beast ?

If you are a bit worried about the dpf clogging up overtime I recommend Cataclean a mate recommended it to me and you can tell the difference in 15 minutes it will give it a good clean and improve mpg, they sell one bottle at Euro Car-parts for £24.99
