Done a job today took half the time of the first clean I went in high on this job as its in an affluent area and it's a large property but even I felt like o was taking the biscuit. Anyway I dropped the price just a £10.00 customer was extremely happy and I told her its for loyalty and because the cleaning time was greatly reduced from the first clean. Anyone else ever done this??

I dropped a £50 price by a tenner because I did it so fast. They were delighted. I don't make a habit of it though. /emoticons/wink.png

I'm thinking of it for a job.

But then some are a bit under while others are a bit higher...?!

I've had a couple of jobs lately which I somehow under quoted. I spoke to both customers, apologised and told them what the new price would be if they wanted me to continue and both were understanding and accepted the new price. Just have a word with them mate.

I have a customer who is £25 from my trad days

Since then i have her daughter and brother as customers

It doesn't take me more than 30 minutes so i dropped it to 20 and said that's because i am quicker now I'm wfp

And that is 30 minutes with customer watching as she has a fair bit of conservatory

More like 20 when no one is in

no but theres a few i do where i think kinell i wouldnt pay £15 for 10 mins work

but i have a few i think, i wish id have quoted this higher

so i dont mind

Nope custy agreed to quote so therefore price stays the same , You're earning to much mate /emoticons/smile.png

Last week got a call from a tenant needing an urgent clean for end of tenancy, as it happens I was update to on my round so I agreed to "squeeze" her in and quoted £35 based on a quick drive by viewing (resident only parking area). I arrange to go there 2 days later, the job only took me 25 mins, so I billed her £25.

I have a few jobs on my round that in hindsight I have overpriced, but I would not reduce those prices, if the customer says in the future they have been given lower quote by another windy, at least I have some room to revise my price if I wanted to keep them on.

I have been paying great contemplation to this for some time, I have often wondered what is a 'fair' price for and whom is to judge what a fair price for a job is? Well there are actually two answers to this question and both are subjective.

1: A fair price to charge is whatever you feel you are happy to do the job for, if you think it's £5 then that's fair, if you think it's £50 then that's fair too.

2: A fair price is what the customer decides is worth paying for the job.

Now with both these answers the customer or you have the choice to take it or leave it, no one is holding a gun to anyone elses head.

What you value your time at is entirely down to you. You could be happy to make a tenner an hour and only do five hours a day or you may want to make £50 per hour and do a full eight hour day, but what makes you worth it? It is no more than someones opinion.

Personally I aim for £30 - £40 per hour, I go for £1 per minute on the glass, so if I am working on a job that takes 10 minutes, I charge £10.

These days I have a minimum charge of £10. After all it cost me money in fuel, tools, time etc to go there so I figure there has to be a minimum.

If you call out a plumber or a sparky or have to take the motor to a garage almost anywhere in the country labor alone is going to cost you £40 per hour and as other threads have had us agree we are skilled tradesmen also.

So what's a fair price to charge? Whatever you like, as long as the customers happy to pay it!

Some fair points. This is the second time I've ever tried to do it. I do have some over priced and some a little lower than they should be. I think it just shows you have a bit of respect for the costumer if another window cleaner ever knocks and offers a quote they may well think back to that day and decide you know what he does a great job and doesn't take the ****. So let's not even give this guy the time of day. Don't get me wrong I'm not making a habit of it but this was Deffo priced to high!

When u leave your house in the morn to go to work u r selling a day of your life. That's valuable to me. I want as much £££ as poss. If I've quoted and it's over then I will take it.

Of course you do and so do I. I could have probably taken the dosh and nothing more would have been said. Something just didn't sit right with me on this one. If I had under priced it I would have eventually put it up. Same goes for that fact that I've way over priced it in my eyes. Put it this way job took me 30-35 mins and I had it priced at £60 so dropped it to £50 I also do a lot of the surrounding neighbours so works out as a great earner of a day maybe I'm just soft

Do what feels right for u mate. That's what I do. I have a house I do on request. £200 for 3 hours. I don't feel guilty at all. I quoted. They accepted.

It depends... Today I knocked down a job by £5 because I do a lot of the same size properties in the area and they all talk.

By knocking it down they all match and all is fair when they talk down the pub :). That way a keep a customer and he feels like is getting the same deal.

Green is spot on, I think the general consensus would agree that the definition of a fair price is one that both parties are happy with. one interesting point to consider though is that the expectation of a fair price is subject to change. By that I mean what is a fair price one day to the customer might be too expensive the next day if another windy knocks on their door and quotes a much lower price. Equally the windy may read on a window cleaners forum about others pricing levels and realise his rates are too low. This is touching on the dynamics of supply and demand. To maximise your profits using pricing, by that I mean getting as much work for the highest possible return, you have to understand how much competition theres is (supply), and the volume of customers seeking a window cleaner services (demand). This will of course vary from town to town, and is not as easy to discover as it to write down in black and white. BUT the important thing to remember is that price is only one tool you have to secure and keep hold of your customers. I have mentioned before the importance of value added benefits before price cutting and stand by this. I firmly believe that it in our interests, no it is our duty to avoid at all cost price cutting which ultimately could lead to price undercutting and the inevitable race to bottom as far as pricing goes.

Sorry another one of my rambles....

I was approached last Monday and asked can I start doing his windows and how much will I charge? I had a quick gander round and quoted £25.

No I don't think that's fair he replied, I was happy with my last window cleaner until he emigrated, and he charged £35, so that's what I'm happy to pay you!!

It sometimes works both ways

I had a similar one Steve garwood. Last summer I was asked to quote an office for window cleaning in and outside. I thought it would take an hour. Quoted £30. The girl said £30??? I said yes. She said quote again. It's to low. I said £50. She said yes. Clean em. Now do it monthly

I bet that kind of honesty will win you at least five more customers? She'll be banging on about it to anyone that will listen for weeks about it.

I believe in Karma and doing good turns for people.

Fair play to you.
