Yea. 284 at toolstation. I’ll have a measure up. Doubt it would take all my power tools but better to have some than none.

Plod called tonight. Asked a load of questions, the answers to which were already in the report I submitted then asked me to let him know if I have any luck checking the neighbours for witnesses or CCTV. I remember when that used to be their job. ?

No such thing as bad and good areas for the guys doing this. I genuinely don’t think I have a single client who isn’t wealthy and lives in a nice area and large property. Sadly that means rich pickings for the thieves as those areas are always having work done. Lots of work. Lots of tradesmen, lots of nice tools.

No attempt to hide it. No rush. No hiding their faces from cctv. They know the staff won’t get involved and the police won’t respond so why not.

The world has gone to ? when things like this have become normal,

We work hard do everything by the book then certain people from all communities just pish all the other people's cornflakes

Sadly in the areas we work in, as lovely as they are, this is rife and the police seem to have no interest in dealing with it. Couple of ‘trap’ vans set up and they’d have a few of the streets and get the rest worried but of course no resources, not a priority etc etc. Meanwhile they continue regardless knowing that the worst that can happen is they might get a good kicking from a couple of tradesmen if caught, but mostly they won’t be and there isn’t really any penalty so why wouldn’t they continue.

I think on the whole with thefts the police right across the country have no interest in dealing with what they may perceive as the more low-level stuff

I do think the police just don't have enough resources to deal with thefts. We can't really blame the police for prioritising, it's the gov's fault for lack of funding, red tape, and the stupid sentencing guidelines - I'm not just blaming this gov.

But the Police have plenty of time to escort the - Just Stop Oil brigade when they are blocking traffic...... The Police are useless....
 
If the police refuse to record a crime and issue a crime no., they are in breach of Home Office guidelines. That is why we can't count on police recorded crime statistics.

My daughter recently had a grands worth of luggage taken while on a train. Wouldn’t even issue a crime reference as they were at least honest enough to tell her it wouldn’t be investigated.

When I was a prison officer in 1992 we were told it costs £575 to house a prisoner. Can you imagine how much it is now? probably 3 times that amount. They then went on to privatise the escorting of offenders. Up here GeoAmey has the contract and can't get anyone to work for them on minimum wage or just above. This means offenders are stuck in prisons and can't make court. So its only a matter of time before Prisons take back the contract or everything stalls. Money is now behind everything, the Gov think they will save money by privatising things but when there is no money in it then they just hand the contract back or go bust. The Gov has learned nothing since Carillion and that's why the merrygoround just continues on its merry way.

Kind of places are you working ? Down town Iraq?. You wouldn't think someone would steal anything out your van while your working.

Junkies etc wouldn't know the cost of the equipment, they would take £2 sitting on the dash not knowing there's something worth hundreds an arm away from them.

Not sure where you’ve been working but tool theft has been a huge issue for years, often linked to organised crime. These aren’t junkies but criminal gangs. As I said earlier all my clients live in big houses in ‘nice’ areas. That comes with having lots of money to spend, lots of building work, and lots of tradies with lots of expensive tools. I’m on here for my pressure washing work but mostly I’m a landscaper by trade so we’re not taking about a couple of squeegees and a bucket in the van. They know that if you’re working you’ve got tools with you. Same as when you’re parked in suppliers premises. Far better bet than breaking in to your van on your driveway at night when you’ve probably emptied it. If it doesn’t happen where you are you’re either working someone very isolated or very poor.

One road where I do about 70% of my work has been hit by everything from tool theft to catalytics to cannibalising luxury cars on the street for parts. Couldn’t buy a house there for less than £2m. It’s certainly not a reflection of how rough the area is. Quite the opposite unfortunately.

No expert on it but I suspect that they get round that by giving you a number when you report it. But that isn’t a crime reference number. They make it quite clear on the website that you will only get that if in their opinion there is sufficient evidence to investigate further. In the case of my two thefts I did get one as I had CCTV and car reg for the first and car reg for the second, but the first is a month old now and today I was finally told that they would release the pictures but the report was now considered closed. And the second one I also got a call for and told that it was closed as there was nothing they could investigate. Total waste of time for them and me. Just ticking boxes really.
 
As I think of this and remember watching programs, the police can chase any criminal and arrest them for a crime but if they don't have sufficient evidence for prosecution then it either gets dropped or the crown prosecution service throws it out, we can all say the police are useless but the fact is they have to tick all the boxes all of which were made by people much higher up than the police officer's

The town all my work is in the average value of house puts the town second in all of scotland, so it's defo not a poor area. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but if it does I'm not aware of people robbing vans for tools while they are working. Maybe it's not caught on up here yet.
