Hi my 40 40 membrane has only lasted about 9 months is it because I only fill it once a week and flush it for about 15 minutes. Is it best to top it up every day and flush every day . Change pre filters and resin every 3 months. Thanks Mark [emoji106]

I'm no expert, that's @sprucearea, was it damaged in the bad winter? If it froze you might have damaged it then, otherwise it must be a poor quality filter to only last that long. Mine is coming up 2 years old and filters approx. 4000 litres a week starting from around 400ppm and is still operating around 96%

Usual questions I ask when this subject arises are;

What is your water pressure? ours is 50psi.

What is your flow from the tap fully open? - ours is 13lpm. This would also apply to the water at the r/o.

What membrane are you using?

Where did you get your r/o from?

When processing water, what is your pure to waste ratio?

What is your tap water tds?

What is the tds of the pure water the r/o produces before resin?

@Part Timerhas also asked some relevant questions when it comes to freezing during the last winter.

The other points to ponder are what the r/o was producing when you first got it, and has something happened that has caused the r/o membrane to not work to expectations? We have all suffered from a higher tap water tds this dry spell, so the problem maybe a higher input tds.

Yes thanks to all just changed pre filters 40 membrane and resin did a flush and back to 0 ppm .water out of tap is 296 ppm I think it must have been the cold or maybe one day I left it filling while at work and came home to say there has been a burst water main so probably all the mud and **** was going through and nackerd it up . Thanks for the help from everyone. Cheers Mark [emoji106]

We do have a sediment issue in our water supply from time to time which blocks up the sediment filter and restricts the amount of water going into the membrane housing. The knock-on effect with this restriction is the water pressure on the membrane itself drops and the membrane works less efficiently.

But being happy with your output at zero after a resin and filter change may not solve the underlying problem. What you need to check now is what the tds of the pure is out of the r/o before the di vessel. You see, the new resin will or should bring the tds of the water down from 296 to zero on its own - its just that the resin won't last long in the process.
