I dont even take the keys out my van when it's parked on the street around town ?

Quite regularly see people be nosey in the back of the van when it's parked in the town center, it's still new tech to most people round where I live haha

Haha! I locked myself in the boot of my car years ago (Cavalier). It was getting a bit rusty in the boot from condensation from damp kayaking gear. I got home from work early (a very rare occurrence). I thought, I know I'll paint some Waxoil in to slow down the rusting. I started painting but couldn't quite reach the far in corners. No choice but to get in. Ahhah! I thought, I'm not silly, ill drape a jacket over the lock catcher incase the boot closes with a sudden gust. Working on the last bit up in the corner, twisted and contorted to get at it. I felt the jacket slip off as I was moving around. Ah! It'll be alright, I'm nearly finished.

Ahem! The only gust of the day and I was locked in the boot and all my neighbours were still at work. Had to wait quietly about half an hour till one got home. Then shouted, got, released, and explained with some embarrassment. No mobile phones in 1993. ?
That would've panicked me big time. Got a terror of being trapped in confined space. Rarely take the lift if theres stairs.

I've been locked in the back of a Peugeot partner before after pulling into a busy lay-by for a sneaky piddle in a bottle

Managed to press the door release button through the mesh bulkhead with a drain rod i had randomly in the van
What a bunch of Muppets we really are... Well only some of us I suppose. ??

Haha! On two occasions in my pipeline days I wormed my way tens of metres up the inside of pipes with a torch to check suspect joints before we filled and pressure tested the pipelines. Scary enough but I always liked a bit of fear/edginess. ?

Lol you wouldn’t be allowed to do that now with H&S , when I was an apprentice at the garage our firm had a contract with the mod to supply av cat and av gas if the load was rejected due to dirt in the fuel it was dumped and the apprentice ( me ) was lowered into the tank and to clean it out with mutton cloth , the fumes in there nearly killed you and made your eyes water , it should never have been allowed then it was highly dangerous if I had collapsed they would never have got me out ,as I had to crawl through the baffles to the front tank and work my way back .

I'm sure most of us have done some edgy/crazy things in our past. ?

Normally the door handle is on the master door. Same as the outside but piggy backed on the inside. The slave door release is in between the two door shuts on my van.
I think that used to be the case with all vans years ago, but seemingly not now, I guess they never think a lone driver is going to get trapped in the back ?

Some vans came out with the option of automatic electronic double locking. There are also after market suppliers who will fit slam locks.

My son's Citroën Berlingo was fitted with an electronic version of a slam lock that automatically locked the rear doors when they were shut. It was wired into the van's central locking system. I removed all the wiring and returned it to standard when he realized what a pain it was using the van as a window cleaning van.

My Peugeot Boxer has central locking. First press of the lock button on the remote locks all the doors. A second press activates a lock that doesn't allow opening the door from inside. Under normal day-to-day operation, the rear doors don't automatically lock when the door is closed. As you drive away, all the door locks automatically lock. The jury is still out regarding that option for me. I can send the van into Peugeot and get it cancelled along with the annoying seat belt unfastened alarm, but it's hardly worth the cost.
Mine has two separate buttons on for the cab and one for the cargo area not sure of the entire set up but I am guessing deadlocks are fitted as mentioned previously I haven't been able to open the drivers door from reaching through the window from outside when I have had both the cab and cargo locked.

64 plate Vauxhall combo aka Fiat Doblo
The same as me mate. Mines got a round hole with a little lever inside the the rear main door. The other handle which I’m guessing was the one you pushed is on the slave door. Pushing this one releases the slave door but doesn’t release the master door which is latched on to it.. You need to operate the little tiny latch inside on the master door.

I had a look today, I think it may be possible to push on the the latch as I'll call it and get it open, I'll try it later this week when at home, no hole that you mention though.
