Is 70years old , too old.

I'm 61 and arthritic. To be honest it's gruelling I can't keep up with the youngsters. But I do provide a good service! I know 70-year-olds that are much fitter than me, so I don't think 70 is too old if you can manage it at your own pace. Just don't expect to compete with the youngsters, it's just reasonable. But I wish you success in your endeavour...
 
Some people are just made of sterner stuff....I know a guy who works out in the gym 6 days a week,6am every morning and sometimes does another session in the afternoon,he also goes cold water swimming,climbs mountains and all sorts of other activities,he also runs his own blind/shutter fitting business and he's 57.....

Some other sedentary guys the same age can hardly walk without getting out of breath,have arthritis,COPD and heart problems....
 
I’m unlikely to retire so when I come of age I’ll hopefully work fewer hours and not every day especially the very cold days! With the right nutrition and supplements window cleaning is viable and may even delay premature ageing that many retired people find themselves falling into through lethargy.
Better than a gym subscription and get to speak with many people each day. Have a crack at it!

I hope to do both! Weight training well into my 70s and beyond and window cleaning part time!

Next March I’ll be 60 and my original plan was to retire.
I have a big private pension that kicks out, so money won’t be an issue.
But I have hypertension and do struggle to sit still, apart from when I’m fishing strangely!
So because of this, I’m going to sell some more of my round off and go 3 days a week to keep my interest in and keep my fitness going.
I honestly couldn’t go to the gym, it would bore the living daylights out of me.
My wife and I are going to spend January to March abroad every year once she is 60 in 3 years, so I think I’ll retire then.
 
I really battle to be consistent in the gym, I was regularly up untill October then a few things came up and broke the routine not been back since, I’ve got to man up again!

Beware of the gap.....I can honestly say I've only ever had a few full weeks off here and there from the gym in 9 years of regular training and that's usually because of a heavy cold,etc...

Personally I think if you want to make progress you need to be consistent year in/year out 3 times a week,no alcohol,no cigarettes and eat mostly home cooked food from scratch,prioritise sleep and keep stress to a minimum.

The 4 pillars to good health are...

Diet
Regular training
Sleep 7/8 hours a night if possible
Keep stress levels low
 
Even when I go abroad on holiday I always find time for at least 3 or 4 gym sessions on a typical 10 day holiday to Lanzarote,plenty of walking,a bit of cycling and a dip in the pool

Again NO ALCOHOL!EVER!
 
never beat yourself up if you take exercise and lapse .Actually a custy of my Was the local ironman runner,fire chief pillar of the community type -clean as a whistle -footie coach then had a heart attack and been back n forward to hospital at Papworth ever since . I ran for a few yrs london marathon but then lapsed,a chance meeting with barry mcguigan he was buying a soldering iron and red cabbage seedlings ,he said,to nobody in particular , "you cannot keep pushing yourself"

You never know what's around the corner. As my son said yesterday, you never know how long you're remaining candle is.

We rocked up to clean a customer's house yesterday. House was all shut up. Neighbour came out to tell us that she had died.
She was a widow and working as a trainer, teaching nursing for the nhs. She had just purchased this bungalow 18 months ago and fitted new windows and front door.

She suddenly felt she couldn't breath so called an ambulance. Went into hospital and passed away 4 days later.

She is the third customer of ours who has died this winter.
I felt a little down yesterday after hearing that. I know as each day passes i'm one day closer to my tipping point. That's the reality of life.

Extreme endurance exercise is very bad for you....it can lead to calcification of the arteries and damage the heart...

I hate running so don't do it!😄

Lifting weights,walking,drumming and a bit of cycling and swimming coupled with window cleaning all year round in the fresh air is enough for me....

I also have one day a week where I don't do much at all physically...I just 'potter'!🤣👍
 
Me mindful your bones are weaker than they used to I know a few that do it to top up pensions, but it catches out others that try to do too much,

Its not an old mans game

That's why weight training in the gym is very good for your bones,keep them strong like your muscles and slow down sarcopenia.....

Your bones are a living organism and need impact and weight to stay strong

Astronauts bone density drops significantly after a few months in space due to no gravity
