Making pure water

Hi all.. I'm about to take delivery of my first  backpack system/ pole and a DI vessel with resin tomorrow. My question is .. after hooking up the DI vessel to the tap does the water come pure straight away or will I have to let it run for a bit and keep checking the tds? Also do I check the tds daily everytime I start to fill up my water containers? .. my tap tds currently reads 73 ppm..

The water will come out of the di vessel pure straight away.

The slower you let your water 'peculate' through the resin the better the system will perform.

The bigger the di vessel the longer the resin will last.

I don't use this method but I would check it regularly to get into the habit of doing so. I would suggest your first check would be whilst you are filling your first container.

Others who use this method will have other suggestions based on their experience, but I do know of an instance of someone who never bothered to check and got caught out on several occasions with complaints of spotty windows.

I would certainly suggest you adopt the double di vessel method of processing water.

Definitely worth using double DI as you'll save on resin. When my single DI vessel reaches 5ppm I attach a second vessel after it with new resin in - the resin in this 2nd vessel has less work to do to get the water down to 0ppm. I'll remove the 1st vessel once it reaches tap TDS (which is 77ppm where I am - used to be 54ppm).

You will also need to buy a bag of resin as well. Most of us buy a 25 liter bag of resin such as Tulsion MB-115, but there are other manufacturers that make resin as well.

I'm also fairly new to this did my first resin change at weekend... what I've been wondering is could I put water straight from tap to tank then through di after the pump? I've always used one before and after tank but seems pointless am I just wasting resin? What's best way to do it?

Personally I'd just put water through the DI so it's already pure when you need to window clean. One less thing to worry about when you're out cleaning...

Sounds like that was a right nightmare mate eek! I've not picked the DI vessel up yet, I hope it has in and out markings else I can feel a mistake coming on haha.

Yes it has. Its an arrow that shows direction of flow.

I'm also fairly new to this did my first resin change at weekend... what I've been wondering is could I put water straight from tap to tank then through di after the pump? I've always used one before and after tank but seems pointless am I just wasting resin? What's best way to do it?

The benefit of filling your tank with ordinary water and purifying it as you clean is that you can top up en route with a customer's permission. The downside is that you need to keep a di vessel or 2 inside the van which 1, takes up space, and 2, needs to be securely strapped in.

@SPCleaningdoes it this way and has 2 di vessel in tandem in his van. If you do a search you will find a photo of his setup maybe a year or a little more back if ailing memory serves me.

I have a twin DI installed in my van and colour coded both vessels and pipes with insulating tape to avoid a mix up.

From my understanding I think they mean when your DI vessel tds increases you attatch a second vessel to that one that has the older resin in it and that older resin acts like a pre filter saving the new resin from being hammered ... thus saving a little bit of money in the long run.. it sounds like a good idea which I will be trying

Bang on.. if possible if you put an inline tds meter between your 1st and 2nd vessel you will know when your 1st vessel is completely saturated and stop it chewing into your 2nd.

my tds id the same, atm I use 1 di vessel, check every other day, lasts about 2-3 months. Use 150-200l a day with a backpack.

That's awesome mate! Was hoping I'd get that amount of time from the resin! .. I'm going to take 4-5 25ltr containers plus the backpack and see how far that gets me.. ideally I'd just like to do the tops wfp and the bottoms trad but may catch the wfp bug and completely switch over in time.. also if I find I don't take to wfp I can always use the backpack for soffet/fascia cleaning

I was toying with the idea of ditching the ro and going di only but my tds is 300 round here so would get 3 weeks from a bag so 25 quid a week

Anyone know roughly how much longer i could get from a twin di setup?

It would be a much quicker option to produce water than my current setup and no waste down the drain

I have a similar TDS as you. I got a 4040 from cwp, a combined prefilter and a 7ltr resin bottle from gardiner, with resin filters and fittings all set up for just under £500. I get about 96-98% rejection from it on approx 50/50 ratio. So far I have produced around 15-20,000l and just changed resin for the first time, I estimate it costs me 1.5p a litre all in on a water meter, so has payed for its self already compared to buying water at 6p a litre, and easily cheaper than resin only!

Di only works out to £0.041p a litre so 2 litres for under 1p

Double di would improve that

I have a 450gpd ro which is too slow but to be honest so would a 4040 be slow as i want to be able to fill my ibc which i use to fill my van outside my back gate on demand

Only have a small van and work very local (within 3 miles of home) so only have a small tank

It suits me and i can cane it on a big job and have been home and refilled within 10 minutes and back out to work

I can just turn it on for as long as it takes to fill a 1000l ibc and then forget about it and refil it during the week as needed

Plus having di onboard i can get rid of the awful hose running up my garden constantly and waste hose back down to drain etc

I like my garden to be nice
