You could well find that other pumps will do the same.

I presume that the center 'hub' is stainless steel. If it is then stainless steel comes in various grades and none are totally corrosion resistant. Each grade responds slightly differently when exposed to a corrosive environment. Over the years I honestly doubt that it has made any noticeable difference to your cleaning water and affected its cleaning ability.

A cheap transfer pump is unlikely to have expensive grades of material used in its making. You do get what you pay for. To get the shape of the hub that material would have been subjected to high levels of stress and that would have caused hairline stress fractures in the material hardly visible to the human eye. These 'crevices' are where corrosion is most likely to begin to occur and it's rate depends on numerous factors including the 'condition' and acidity of the water, what type of fasteners (bolts and nuts) are used and influenced by the bearing's material situated on the motor side of the hub. The magnetic fields of the electric motor under power will also have a baring on the corrosion of stainless steel.

A fellow windie has an external cast iron transfer pump and that has to be purged before he fills his van. The water is very polluted with 'red' rust for a few moments during this process.

If your are happy with the pump's service then I wouldn't hesitate buy another one.

Yes, I have been happy with its service. It has lasted about 3 years for around £30. It was just a shock to see the corrosion.

On inspection, the bottom of my holding Tank had a layer of that rust on the bottom of it so I decided to clean it out. I swilled around the remainder of pure water in the tank (about 6") and scrubbed the bottom in the water. Just for the hell of it, I then checked the TDS of the water which looked a little murky, and amazingly, the reading was only 3 :eek:

Funny game this WFP.

Been thinking about either getting another and maybe taking it out of the water when not in use, which could end up being a pain. Or, trying one of those little 12v bilge pumps......Or just carry on as I have done with another pump

I personally wouldn't want to take a sub pump out of the water every time I finished using it. That would be a right pain.

Discolouring the bottom of the IBC tank isn't good and I would look elsewhere for another make of pump and try that.
