Render mix on bifold door frames

Hello everyone, I’ve managed to get most off the glass (from good old fashioned elbow grease) but wanted advice on tackling the frame which is aluminium with a plastic base trim. See picture! Builder is asking me to help…picture to follow

When you say render mix are you referring to mortar/cement ?

The photo doesn't look good from what I can see

It was K-Rend used above the bifolds where there was an extension built. Residue has dripped onto the bifolds from above where they didn’t protect them.

Worst thing…this is my house and I’ve been on at the builder for 6 months but he keeps saying he’ll sort and never does!

We these types of posts frequently and the outcome is never a brilliant one.

I know you are a customer and it's disheartening but I wouldn't get involved in the cleaning and should of left it to the builder. If he couldn't clean it he should replace it. Will his insurance not cover it?

There are specialist chemicals on the market but i personally am not going to say this or that works as there is a risk of further damage.

Get the builder to sort it, don't attempt it yourself as that could make it worse. Sounds like his negligence caused the problem so he needs to sort it. They look like aluminium doors and as such they usually have a very thin coating on them. I'm not sure you can actually remove that staining as it looks to me like it's damaged the coating.
If the builder wont sort it it might be worth speaking to your household insurance company but they might only cover accident damage not negligence.
I'm no expert in ali frames but that doesn't look good at all. There even seems to be damage to the drain covers and they are galvanised! Did they use brick acid to remove some krend splashes?
Definitely get on to the builder, maybe speak to trading standards or citizens advice to help word a letter and advice on what action you can take. Might be too big a cost for small claims court!

@Molly7 very sorry to see the condition your doors have been left in. Same happened to an old neighbour and in hindsight I have no idea why they didn't cover them in the first place. It's not good enough and if you have to contact citizens advice exactly like the others have said on here. You shouldn't have had to resort to cleaning off what was on the glass panes yourself either.

I'm just starting to get back into aluminium again as I'm bored only working a couple of weeks a month

Hi Molly. The windowclean centre sells a product called 'cement off' which it says works on aluminum frames. I've never used it so can't say whether it works. Worth giving them a ring and asking, they're very helpful.

Ye more than likely they will be ruined underneath. One of my customers had a gas leak. Turned out that k rend from around 10 years ago had gone onto the gas pipe that fed their house outside and had corroded the copper pipe causing the leak. God knows what it’s made of but there must be some corrosive elements in there for it to do that. I’ve come across it on some of my window cleans and won’t touch it. It seems to be a lot harder than cement.

You are correct there. They appear to of fully oxidised and fit for the skip. You couldn't even have them recoated as they are now contaminated

Yes it can have a high PH which also reacts with non ferrous metals like aluminium and copper along with Calcium Hydroxide and trace metals like chromium

Hi Molly- Is that K rend on the wall in the background as well? It's almost pea green with algae- how old is that?

Also can't quite tell on the resolution the photo uploads at but judging by the other comments is that bubbles from washing the residue off the glass on the sill or is that where it's eaten through the coating down to bare metal?

Hope the builder has a conscious and admits liability. Very costly lackadaisical approach they've taken.
