This is the tale of where I began.Didnt even own a ladder. Borrowed one from next door. Hunger soon surpasses pride.

That is my whole point mate

If you need to earn money to pay bills and feed your family then you will just get out and do it whether on foot..in a car..or a nice van..you will use whatever is to hand and get food on the table if you are any sort of real husband/wife/parent..pride doesn't even come into it

It has never been cheaper to set up wfp than it is now just because you use a car providing it's clean and tidy it won't stop you picking up work 90 percent of domestic customers don't care what you drive.

A van will always be easier to work from but every one starts some where.

I see loads of new starters with brand new 20k+ vans and the saying all the gear no idea springs to mind.

This guy is not in any financial need though. Mortgage nearly done and soon to retire from the fire service on a decent 30 year old pension scheme. Having jacked in his previous fiddle he's looking at this out of boredom and not necessity. Knowing the bloke he'd not be put off by a days graft either.

His only crime is having ideas beyond his financial means which I'm sure many of us have been guilty of from time to time. All in all a decent bloke whom I won't be renting my van to.

also it real terms he only got a 40% of getting a half a good round with the amount of new guys there is turning up everyday thinking there going to take over the world yet last less then a year when they can only pick up rubbish under priced work
Out of curiosity. In real terms as you put it. How did you come about the 40% statistic ?

I personally think this is not a good idea. If you get any last min offers for add on work etc there will be times you find yourself unable to go out and do them...cos no van. This is limiting your own business.

Also, fuel allowance. You won't be able to claim for when he uses it, so wear and tear isn't covered by the quite generous fuel allowance you'd normally have for such like.

Finally, as stated. Any damage is unlikely but surely would be a nightmare. No one will look after your stuff, like you will.

I couldn't even drive when I started out and as mentioned previously loads of lads come into window cleaning then drop out all that running around for money and not getting paid no holiday pay etc it soon looks like a crappy job been a self employed window cleaner

If he's your mate, keep it that way and him away from this business.

So, as a long service fireman who is to retire shortly with a pension relavent to his salary, he wants to rent your van and thinks an slx is expensive?

I wouldn't be surprised if he thinks what you charge per house is also expensive and whilst he's out building his round he will be gaining work by quoting too cheaply.

Most start ups make the same mistake and increase prices or over time dump what is seen as underpriced work. You're mate won't have to do this if he's mortgage free and with a fair pension.

All that said I would not begrudge him his salary or pension, he will have earnt every penny on some jobs I couldn't do. Finally, most firemen work on the side throughout their service career giving them an extra income when they finish, why has he dumped his last fiddle?

I would keep him well away.
