soft sill brush

Sent using the Window Cleaning Forums mobile app

I have scratch black wooden cladding to the side of a window with a flock sill brush before whilst cleaning the window, never used on windows since only gfs now, I always use the gardiner brush bumpers ever since on all my brushes they don't make them for the sill brush.

there is a window cleaner around here And I have pickup some of his customers due to him scratching sills.

I don't like soft or flocked bristles as I think they hold onto the dirt and can potentially cause issues

Regardless of who done it (that's a discussion for you to thrash out with the client) let's get on to how to fix it in case you do need to put it right.

Run your finger nail lightly across the scratch sideways if you can feel it then there will be a permanent scratch that can only be removed by specialist restorers that 'melt' a matching plastic into it with a tool like a soldering iron and then buff it to match the frame profile.

However, and from your pictures this is the most likely outcome, they are not scratches but marks, customer has probable tried to clean up the frames with a stiff brush and made a mess, instead of admitting it they decided to see the most cost effective way to get it sorted........  blame you and hope you fix it.   Back to that, if you feel so inclined, then Unger Rub Out and a white or green scourer will fix that right up,neither of these are harsh enough to scratch UPVc.  Make sure the scourer is dripping wet, apply a pea size dollop of Rub Out and get to work.

Personally I would hand them a copy of my liability insurance and thank them for their past business as I agree, I don't think you made those marks.

No way have you caused those scratches. I would accept knocks, bumps and dents I might have caused or lots of very fine scratch marks but wouldn’t never admit liability for those!

That last photo looks like the result of a extension lead cable being dragged through the door window repeatedly.

If they want you to try buff it out then fine but charge them £££ because it will be a ball ache

Funnily enough I thought of you as I was cleaning a conservatory yesterday afternoon. I upended my brush to rinse out the gap between the window and the sill and thought perhaps thats where they came from. If thats a technique you would use on a conservatory then perhaps the brush ran along the sill?

Yes I have done this myself many of times without this issue .... I've spent few days with a piece of cutoff cill from a upvc place trying to scratch it on purpose with my everyday use tools ( WFP, scourers, small detail brushes, ) and still hasn't scratched as bad as this conservatory

Some sills will scratch and leave black marks, others won't. I know because I've left black marks on sills from my brush.

No way you caused those scratches with a brush on PVC. I was accused of breaking an electric gate, she always refused to open it and hey presto sent me a bill for £400 I said no way. Prove it or take me to court. You asked me to hop over the five bar gate, which I did regularly never an issue and then hey presto you have an issue and blame me. Goodbye...............
