Setting up my battery, pump and controller?

You dont need a remote if you use a tap.

It depends as they serve a different purpose. A remote is the better option on my setup. As Steve said above, saves pump and battery life.

So you switch off the pump in the van whilst working on the windows? Got a link for these devices. Do they work when you're the other side of the building?

Yes. The range is nowhere near 1000m, but with a new battery it works through/round an average sized house. I have a clip to mount the remote in my belt, and if it doesn't reach I might have to take it out and wave it around a bit. I have broken the antenna off though, and it worked a bit better with it on :laugh:

If anyone is interested I can do a video walkthrough of the parts of my DIY setup. It isn't the best nor the absolute cheapest in the world, but i don't think the features I have can be built much cheaper.

It works! Now until I get my van this board will be carried in and out of car. On backseat with other gear.

Do u think I should move the pump to the right and put two pieces of wood on both sides with holes drilled for the hose to go through to protect me knocking it Don't u think it looks too fragile at the moment?

It's difficult to see how thick the plate is, but it is probably fine. I would perhaps move the pump to the center of the plate so the hose connectors are more protected. But try it out and see what works for you.

One thing I hope you have planned and you absolutely must do though, is fix those electrical connections. You can't leave bare wires like that. Electrical tape is good in a pinch, but heatshrink tubing, sealed connectors or a box with a proper connector block is better in the long run.

The guy in Maplins said cover the connections in gaffer tape as it is waterproof and if they come apart (likely ) can get to them easily. What do you mean a box or sealed connectors? Aren't they also not waterproof.

Yeah I was thinking of moving pump over to the middle then putting two sides on and even a top and maybe a door to protect it all from things being thrown into back seat of car. Sound good? Even thought about putting some sort of clips on where hose comes out of box so if pulled it will yank the clip not the pump itself!

slippy, what connections have you got on the end your hose connecting to the pump

Got them from a specialist hose shop. These things which push into hose then jubilee clips then a screw on thing screws into a double female thing which screws onto pump.

Something like this box.

It doesn't have to be 100% waterproof, you don't leave it soaked under water after all, and it will withstand a little splash or water if it happens. The important part is you can't short circuit anything.

I wouldn't use gaffa tape as is leaves a lot of glue residue on the cable insulation and is horrible to work with later on. Sure, tape will work and you decide yourself, but some heat shrink tubing is just cleaner in my humble opinion.
