At the end of the day it's common decency to say to a long standing customer I need to put your price up x amount rather then just dump them for bigger bucks.

If they decline then fair enough but not to give them the option is not something I would ever do.
The difference with you and all the rest is you have been in business a long time and understand the cycles a business, owner and customer goes through. Until one has experienced it and felt the pain and rush of emotions, others will fail to change. The more experience means one realises its all about Karma and building relationships. You understand this all too well.

Unless the new work  does not become regular after a while and your dumped "cheapest" were regular payers, then you have lost out. Got to be some loyalty in it somewhere.
It’s rare that we get problems with new customers as I spell out exactly how we work , all weathers , all year etc if they hesitate at all I walk away , we are all running business and the more profitable it is the better and more secure for  us and employees, if ones don’t  want to alter there rounds that’s fine , but it’s foolish in my eyes to turn down better paying work why do a job for £20 if you can do an identical property for £25-30 it makes business sense , as an example today I have been working on my own as the guy who normally works with me is on holiday I started at 9:00 and finished at 16:00 , had 30 muinits for lunch so 6:5 hours work including a bit of driving and did £500 , if my maths is right that’s £76:92 per hour . How is this accomplished ? By increasing prices and dumping cheap awkward work , this isn’t boasting i have just taken today’s work as an example of what is easily achievable if you keep refining your rounds , when I started I was earning around £15 per hour ,and struggled to increase it significantly, this is why so many give up after a few months as they cannot make it profitable . Anyone can achieve this I am a grafter but don’t consider myself as a financial expert or business professional  , it’s just common sense to keep refining and improving your work .

@Pjj That's impressive numbers is that £500 + vat or with the vat included?

Why don't you come off the tools?I know you said you like working but your guys must be doing 15-20k a month per 2 in a van more than enough to pay you a very good wage for doing not a lot.

It’s £500 plus the vat , not saying I do that every day but it is becoming the norm more and more . I don’t want to be office based I like being hands on , in the near future Ime going back to working on my own most of the time and down sizing the guys are buying there vans and rounds I want to work 3 days a week for 3 weeks a month I am just experimenting at the moment to see what I can earn per day without killing myself ????

I made £100 at the care home and paid £4 for two rolls in bacon and a cup of tea. Arrived just before 11am and sat in for breakfast and had a great discussion about world war 2. Finished all the windows for 1pm and was soaked as I got caught in a down pour. Went home and cleaned 10 bins then changed out of wet clothes. So I chucked the towel in at 1.30pm and took rest of day off. Later on I picked up some stuff for tomorrows job which involves working inside all day. Aye, variety is the spice of life. Its not all about money but it plays a big part of it. ?

Fair play to you and I get you like to not be office based and like to be hands on but surely with the figures you and your guys do you don't need to clean any glass yourself what so ever and you could pay some one to run the office side.

You could pay yourself a very, very good wage and retire.

If I had 2 lads in a van doing nearly 20k a month then 10k has got to be minimum profit x by 2 vans that's nearly 40k give or take. Plus what you do and for me personally I wouldn't pick up a pole again and I certainly wouldn't be selling it.

It's a great retirement plan.

I daresay the fire service pension is quite comfortable to live on without taking the windows into account.

Which begs the question even more as to why continue to work or sell it.I am sure @Pjjhas other investments or some rentals bringing money in.

For me personally I can't generate them numbers especially on domestic but if I could I wouldn't sell or work it myself.

I'm actually going there Friday.

The holiday rental market is very good with very high prices as well as some affluent areas but I'm surprised on the prices as most of the Cornish don't seam to have loads of money.

@Pjj
Lol Ime an on call watch manager and the pensions only came in for us about 3 years ago Ime due to retire soon and at the moment it  wouldn’t pay me more than a few hundred pounds a year it’s a compleat joke , if I was whole time it would be 30k a year !!!!!!!!

Today’s work was all domestic .  I want to ease off a bit and work 3 days a week and not have to worry about staff , large contracts and weather they will be renewed next year , and all the other day to day issues , maintenance of kit , vans , mot for vehicles ,servicing ,and so the list goes on , the lads that work for me are excellent hard workers and trustworthy and they are keen to buy the work they do it will work well for them and me , the sale of that will be good to ??? and it’s still building rapidly might have to get another van or two ??? before selling it off . As for other  investments I couldn’t possibly comment ????. As I said earlier if I can do it anyone can I don’t have a business brain , I am luck ware I live and when I started there was only one other guy doing the job so it was easy to build fast , having said that there is still a huge shortage of good cleaners that are reliable and do  a good job .

Yes very much so I bumped into a new cleaner in my area he only started last  August and within 6 months he was full up with work , there are literally thousands of new houses being built ,and loads are moving down from London and the Home Counties with pots of money and property up there that would fetch 2 million down hear will cost 650-900 k so they have loads in the bank to spend on maintenance the Cornish by nature are skin flints and hate spending money ones from up country love spending we are getting more and more of this type of customer very good for business.
