Hi everyone. I've just got back from a full day at Pure Freedom and they've installed my new RO van system. I hear tonight it's gotta be around the -1 mark. Here's my problem...I haven't had time/gotten around to buying some kind of heater yet. I was wanting an oil filled one but in all the rush I haven't managed. Will the system be OK overnight with no heating or am I pending disaster? It does have water running through it as per checks etc. Maybe an old duvet over the pump? Any tips would be great. By the way I'll not be working now till Monday.

Cheers.

Most people take their pumps out i think. Ive already brought all our kit in to the house. Looks like its going to be a prolonged cold snap, -3s and 4s next week so it says. We are already closed til next week for however long it lasts. Got a round coming up with a lot of very elderly customers and i wont take the risk of them slipping on ice thats formed from the water I’ve left behind. Dont want our hoses splitting either.

I'll not be taking the pump out Incheck it's brand new fitted today and I don't have the know how to do it yet.

Does anybody else here just take absolutely no precautions whatsoever and just risk it?

Fair enough. I heard another guy say he had a cracked pump when it was forecast as -2 and it went down to minus 5. If youre in any doubt, take precautions where you can i guess.

Take the hose reel inside, -1 won't freeze the R/O as it's sat beside a tank of water that's circa 5 degrees. That will drop but nothing to worry about

Cheers mate but it's an electric reel and fixed so I can't take it inside. And while there's some water in my tank, it's literally only 30lts if that.

Shut the supply to the pump from the tank off

Run the pump for 20 seconds so it has run dry

That will stop any damage to the pump from the water expanding as it freezes

Get a £20 oil filled radiator tomorrow and put it on in the van overnight while it is cold

Duvet over the reel and pump will help a bit

Thanks Dave

If you can be bothered you can unscrew the filter housing on the pump also and empty that just to stop it having an ice cube in it when you want to use it

I wrap bubble wrap around the hose reel and also around the pump, and I  have sewn 2 sand bag sacks together the hessian ones  then wrap them around the hose reel never a problem and 2old blankets over the system

Don't worry about freezing if you're not working tomorrow. Nothing will be damaged at - 1. It will only cause you problems if significantly colder. Drain your pump by disconcerting pipe and run it for a few seconds with stop tap shut
