COVID-19 Update

Dear customer,

The Chancellor, this evening, announced a new Self-employment Income Support Scheme to support self-employed people who have been adversely affected by COVID-19.

GOV‌.UK has further details about who is eligible for the scheme and how it will work.

Self-employed people do not need to get in touch with HMRC as the scheme isn’t yet open for applications. HMRC will contact eligible customers by the beginning of June, inviting them to apply.

Unfortunately, we are aware of an increase in scam emails, calls and texts. If someone gets in touch claiming to be from HMRC, saying that financial help can be claimed or that a tax refund is owed, and asks you to click on a link or to give information such as your name, credit card or bank details, please do not respond.

HMRC will never contact you out of the blue to ask for these details.

The government has also introduced the following help for the self-employed:

Deferral of Self Assessment Income Tax payments due in July 2020 and VAT payments due from 20 March 2020 until 3‌0‌‌ June 2020

Grants for businesses that pay little or no business rates

Increased amounts of Universal Credit

Business Interruption Loan Scheme

Directors of their own company paid through PAYE, may be able to get support using the Job Retention Scheme.

We will continue to share the most up to date information directly with you as it becomes available.

Yours sincerely

Jim Harra

Whether you are working or not I think you need to prepare for the long haul in this situation. I fully expect this three week semi lockdown period to be followed by a full lockdown, in fact I suspect that is the governments plan they just don't want to alarm people. I would fully expect a cycle of semi lockdown then lockdown to continue until at least July. If you can, make sure you are ready for this.

Fortunately i've got my 3 years accounts and will be allowed to put in a claim in early June. The one thing nagging in the back of my mind will the HMRC void my claim because as they see it I could have worked?

I'm just watching our Mayor Andy Burnham on the t.v. and rarely agree what he does for our city but he said non essential working should stop and I totally agree with him.

Also seeing on here the guy's that have to work to look after families and pay bills, it would be good if the government could give them interest free loans and pay it back over a few years on top of their tax bill.

No one wants to work out there, so if everybody received cash help they'd stay in and this awful virus can die off.

We are all in the same boat and the longer folk are moving about the longer it will take to get back to normal.
Actually, the idea is to self isolate to drag it out longer to relieve the stress on the NHS. It would be over a lot faster if everyone ignored the advice but a lot more people would die. I agree with your post but I think people ought to be prepared for the long haul.

Quoting The Sun as a point of law to a copper, or anyone for that matter, isn't good practice.
You could quote the GOV website instead of the sun, as that explicitly says you can work. Which is completely at odds with everything else.

I've messaged the South Yorkshire Police FB page to ask them to clarify the contradiction between GOV website advice and reports of Windys being told to go home. If they reply then I'll post it on here.

They are "paying" us for March, and if you want to can continue to work  it will not affect money being paid. The grant is 80% less tax so basically if you earned on average £30k a year you will be given £6k to cover March - May. It then might be continued after that,

You can only claim if you've submitted a tax return for year 18/19. If you haven't then I believe you will have to apply for UC.
Tried this morning and heres my situation, ill share it but it does contain some personal detail.

I am in the 5% but only because i dont have a 2018/19 tax return.

My household: Me, Wife, 13yr old stepson with autism, 9yr old step daughter.

Current household income: £1430.00 (including child benefit, tax credits, carers allowance and disability living allowance)

Current household outgoings: £1460 (excluding food and fuel)

Savings £1500.00

Yes i can get UC but anything they give me in UC they will instantly take off tax credits as its classed as an income.

Tax credits and UC must be claimed as a couple if you live with your partner.

Dont be fooled people they wont give you anything with one hand without taking it with another.

Before i get the 'you can go to work' replies, my wife has a low immune system due to cancer in 2017 so i WILL NOT work and pose any more threat to her health than i need to.

I thought they'd doubled the threshold of UC for self employed. Apologies if this is incorrect but because it doesn't affect me I didn't take a great deal of notice.

According to them im not technically self employed because im yet to do a tax return, so asked if i could have my dole backdated to June 2019 as if im not self employed or employed i must have not realised that i was out of work pmsl.

Its a giant farse for people like me, like the chancellor said

"People (like me) have to realise that, they are using tax payers money"

So im guessing my 28yrs of fully paid Tax and NI is worth sweet fa.

That's odd because I worked up until the 23rd march that's 3 weeks money I've earned and they are effectively paying again, I'm not knocking it though but you'd have thought they'd be paying from the day of the announcement.

They back dated the PAYE to then so had to really. I thought they might have started it from the new tax year to be honest. You will be taxed on it though so don't spend it all

If no one has done their 2019 tax return, HMRC are giving one months grace to submit it and therefore to avail of the 80% government payment.

Secondly. I suggest people read the Imperial College report (Mr Ferguson). The train of thought is the only way to suppress Covid 19 is to "keep up" social distancing  until enough vaccine is produced, approx 12-18 months time.

At the moment I am doing as the government says but it cant be sustainable over such a long period of time. Would we have any business to go back too?

Has anyone seen or commented here on the latest Gov Guidelines?

2. Work carried out in people’s homes

Work carried out in people’s homes, for example by tradespeople carrying out repairs and maintenance, can continue, provided that the tradesperson is well and has no symptoms.

Again, it will be important to ensure that Public Health England guidelines, including maintaining a two-metre distance from any household occupants, are followed to ensure everyone’s safety.

No work should be carried out in any household which is isolating or where an individual is being shielded, unless it is to remedy a direct risk to the safety of the household, such as emergency plumbing or repairs, and where the tradesperson is willing to do so. In such cases, Public Health England can provide advice to tradespeople and households.

No work should be carried out by a tradesperson who has coronavirus symptoms, however mild.
If we infected a customer that is isolating and they catch the virus and dies. Later it is proved to be the Window Cleaner, who had no symptoms or till later and had a an outbreak. Is the WC guilty of man slaughter?

Im west ham and was kind of hoping season would be scrapped but its going through. Might go right to the wire, but we've been terrible this season. Just started to improve when season got stopped. Tough call, thought norwich were doomed but their putting up a real fight too.
Just been speaking to my next door neighbour. He tells me his brother in law (floor fitter), was pulled over by the rozzers this morning and told to go home.

Apparantly he had screenshots on his phone of the government website etc about continuing working  but the police did not want to know.

Have a great weekend fellow windies, pub time.......??

I to am gutted the season finished. Really wanted to watch West Ham get relegated ??
