If you have a guy self employed for over a certain amount of months they are entitled to all the benefits of an employee such as holiday pay and sickness etcMaybe worth just having a paye employee to start with

I never knew that. Do they have to work a certain amount of hours to be entitled to that?

Not sure..i know the government made all these rules to stop self employed subbies etc being abused

A courier firm i know uses self employed for a certain amount of time then offers them contracts for that reason..or uses someone else for a while before using the previous guy

Its good to earn money, but at the same time you need to look after your staff, especially if you want to keep them, and if you want them to work well, they need to be motivated, so its not such a bad thing. I suppose what taking them on as a subby gives you is the chance to figure the guy out before you commit to a contract so to speak. Anyone can give it large in an interview, and anyone can be keen for a few weeks, but you tend to see what someones made of after a month or two of hard graft. I'm a great example of a terrible member of staff, but when its my own business I work hard./emoticons/biggrin.png

That's why i think noobs are good as employees in this game

Get em working to your standards and methods as a self employed then take em on permanent if they come up to scratch

The whole employee thing scares me, reckon if I was to take someone on they would have to go self employed and I pay them cash each week.
The whole tax, NI, holiday pay, bank holidays, maternity leave yadda yadda yadda, all seems very tiresome and hard work.

it is a bit scarey, but like everything gets easier more you do it. years ago [when i was a car mechanic] i one year employed 2 lads as self employed subbies and i dont mind admitting i failed at employing , for the simple reason i simply hadnt enough work to pay wages . This time around i got my act into gear with a ruthless generating work plan that i started first, BEFORE taking on a helper. iv also gotten quite a few good ideas on doing the employing/marketing by watching MOLE AND JERSEY show videos on youtube,they are 2 window cleaners in the states who employ.

I'm a crap employee as well, I hate being treated like a **** by someone who nearly every time is completely useless and is propped up by those under him/her, plus I don't like doing what I am told even more so by someone I have little or no respect for, AND I hate the idea of working my ass off to make someone else rich....

Work my arse off though for myself and the few jobs I have had that the above didn't apply to.

Exactly. The funny thing is that I became a **** employee over the years through years of putting up with the sort of bull**** you're talking about. And I thought it was my fault/problem, but then I realised that its not, its just that I have no motivation to build someone elses bank balance while mine stagnates. Being self employed is the best thing any mature individual can do IMO.
