How do you find your trailer system?

Hey guys,

We've run our business for a few years out of a van and it's been fine. However as we only want to have one vehicle we're looking to go to a car and trailer. We know we won't be as quick or professional looking. However for anyone that has a window cleaning trailer how do you find it? Pros and cons? What car do you use?

We've already reached max round size so we don't take on new work and we are pretty confident we can get a trailer to all our customers.

Why not just buy a bigger van, if there's only 2 of you doing domestic an 800l tank should suffice

Reversing is difficult with a small trailer. We are in a hilly area and sometimes we had to uncouple the trailer to turn it. Very risky.

Keeping it frosty free in winter was another issue.

Potential trailer theft was another worry.

These days claiming business expenses for running a car could also need to be considered. You will need a fairly big car to pull a trailer with enough water for a day's work. My trailer had 3 x 150 litre tanks on it.


Best thing I ever did was go to a van. With a full round, you must be earning enough to run a van from your business.

My advice from experience is to stay with your van. I would never go back to a trailer.

There is a local lad who has used a trailer for years. He pulls it with an old shape 2.2 liter Mondeo. He only uses the Mondeo to pull his trailer. Pole goes inside the car and the inside of his car is always damp and smells damp. He doesn't use it privately apart from dropping the kids at school on the way to work. If they don't like the smell then they have the option of walking.

Best potential option would be go for a pick up truck, expensive to buy and run yes, but it would give a working vehicle and a practical 5 seat vehicle for out of work.

This would allow you to go down the diy route of a tank in the load bed which could be taken out on weekends.

Only issue is the same as a trailer, preventing your system freezing, a pump box is removable which is what I used years ago, but I had the luxury of a big garage to park my truck in overnight.

We were looking at a TAV2/3 trailer, and a reasonably decent towing vehicle. We're on the coast on the countryside so frost and theft isn't a concern as it very rarely goes below 0 and it'll be in a garage.

We had looked at a pickup truck but don't think it'll work for what we're looking for.

We aren't against replacing our van it would just be nice to have the best of both worlds with one vehicle, as we don't work full time. Going shopping in a van full of gear is a bit of a pain
