Just bought a new leisure battery from halfords . 115ah . I've been using it 2 weeks now . But is it normal to take longer to charge it than the amount of time it was used . Example . Use it for 6 hours . It takes 8 hours to charge . It gets charged every night . Any tech heads or spruce like to help out . Thanks .

This depends on what size charger you have. If your pump/s are using more power an hour that your charger is delivering then this very well maybe the case.

A battery also accepts or can absorb a lower rate of charge the fuller it gets. So if you ran your pump for 10 minutes it will take longer to replace that. We find that our 10 amp intelligent charger will get down to a point where its charging at less than an amp, but the charger is still in charge mode.

What charger are you using?

It should last about a week when it's new and charge overnight. I used to use a halfords charger but I don't charge my battery anymore. Went solar so it charges all day

Are you just using solar now? A few years back you advised someone who came and went to have both solar and a split charge relay.

The charger I use is a ring automatic standard charger 8 amp ..don't know if it's any good . Been using it over 8 years now . Is it up to the job..? Thanks for that reply spruce .

If our pump has been working pumping water for 6 hours, then we would have drawn about 27 amps from the battery.

That needs to be put back in. Even at the start of the charging cycle I doubt you would get 8 amps from your charger. We would probably have got 5 or 6 amps. So already we are looking at 4 - 5 hours charging. I mentioned earlier that the battery absorbs less the fuller it gets, so 8 hours maybe within it capabilities.

Ring do make a range of battery chargers, so you want one that is suitable for leisure batteries. My intelligent leisure battery charger seems to charge the leisure battery much faster than the vans alternator does and only uses 13.9v to do it. My vans alternator pushes 14.4 to 14.5 volts.

That's the only comparison I have. They say that a leisure battery is a much more sophisticated piece of equipment and uses staged charging where a standard starter or car battery charger is a simple piece of equipment.

If you are unsure if the charger is working properly then I would suggest you change it.

I've used this one for the past 8 years.

Right . Think I will stick with the charger . Not bothered it seems to take a while to charge . I was only concerned that the battery was faulty . As long as the charger isn't doing any damage to the battery. Thanks for the in depth info spruce.

Halfords will carry out a capacity check if your ever in doubt about the battery, takes a few minutes - gone are the days of 'cap' testing batteries over a set time period, they clip a monitor on and it tells them what's left in the battery in V's and aH. If it's down on what it should be they'll give you a new one - simples!

I've always used smart chargers with my leisure batteries (ctek - awesome) they do take a long time to charge but that's the point, gentle and slow. I've got a collection of batteries that my CTEK charger has revived that the AA or RAC have changed because they are 'knackered'
