Spoke to a customer on Friday and mentioned washing money to clean it in the current coronavirus climate and he said, “Oh no, you can’t do that, they’ll do you for money laundering.” Made me smile ?

Seriously though, are any of us who still handle some hard cash taking any precautions, like wearing gloves or actually cleaning it. Would like to hear your suggestions.

A traditional window cleaner I used to know was always careful. He would always chuck all coins in his bucket. We WFPers of course can’t do that but are any of taking measures to protect ourselves and others when we give change?

Since soap breaks down the fatty lipids that bind a virus together and renders it harmless I thought about keeping a jar of soapy water in my vehicle to drop coins in. Not so easy with notes of course.

Unless your licking them I wouldn't worry about it ?

I wear gloves (Showa and nitrile) and rinse my hands off every now and then, using the poles jets. Cash wise I've seen a few people throw there notes into soapy water, given they are mostly plastic now it's no issue, just be more careful with the antique £20 notes!

This article gives info on how long it can last on certain objects. My plan was to put all money in a bag and leave it for a week before handling it, give enough time for the virus to die if it is there (if however this will not work please say). But I don't take that many cash payments so not worried about physical cash flow, different if a lot of payments are cash.
