HI all I bought a new 450gpd RO/DI system which is temporarily set up until I make a permanent place for water purification (I have to set up and put away when not in use). when I connect water mains to the RO I always open the flush tap for a couple of mins before closing and putting pure water pipe through the resin. I have found that when I close the flush tap then test water the tds is at somewhere around 16 straight from the RO, but if I leave flowing for a couple of mins it then comes down and steadies out at a tds of 4, thats when I connect it to the resin to make my purified water. This happens everytime i set my RO/DI system up and feel like if I had it as a permanent set up the resin would not last as long as the water out of the RO would be at 16 until it drops to 4. Fairly new to all this so appreciate all the help I can get maybe this is normal but not too sure. Many thanks for reading my essay. ?

Yes mine is the same, when I start filling it’s around 20 before the resin, then after a minute or so it drops down and down to about 4, I think what you have is pretty normal.

It’s called Tds creep our forum RO specialise @spruce would be able to answer better than me,  I have two bypass valves on my RO that I open/close for a few minutes due to the TDS crept when turning on the water.

ah right i thought it would be normal, my worry is that it would make you have to go through resin quicker

im interested in doing that myself once i have set up permanently that way I feel like resin will last longer?

If it isn't used for a 3-4 days a 2 minute flush isn't much good, I flush my R/O for around 5 minutes every working day, you also need to be careful that you don't fully drain the R/O of water and cause the membranes to dry out whilst not in use.

ah right i will bare that in mind, thanks for that, I only need to use it every other day so when im not using I always store upright in a big silicone bucket

Yeah should be fine then, I always flush my R/O after production so as to clear it out of contaminants, in your case you could do this also but then run it with the flush off for 1 minute so as not to drain the R/O of water then flush before production maybe, mine is up a height so mine would drain out if I let the flush valve open.

That's another good idea as I always flush before production. I think it makes sense to flush right after producing because it doesn't give solids a chance to settle in.
