i also was previously with SMUG last year . Had a good deal dont know why they doubled it There loss
I think they are trying it on a bit. Basically they are relying on the policy holder to be lazy and just to continue with the existing policy without going through the hassle of fishing around for a cheaper quote. It annoys the hell out of me. You have been a loyal customer for a year and instead of recognising that, the insurer whacks up the renewal price by a few hundred in the hope that you continue.

I had exactly the same thing happen with my park home insurance. My renewal price was about £100 pounds dearer so went on confused. Managed to get the insurance down quite considerably. A week later my existing insurer contacted me asking if I wanted to renew with them. When I told them I got a cheaper quote they managed to beat that quote by £2. I told the guy at the end of the phone they should have given me the cheaper quote in the first place. Then they might have had me as a customer for another year.

Like you said their loss. Hopefully they will figure out that increasing your renewal price substantially will not earn them more money.
