I am going to try fingerless merino wool gloves with neoprene canoeing mitts (with open palm design) over the top. I prefer breathable and warm as opposed to waterproof so hopefully hands don't stink from sweat all day or suffer if water seeps in.
The combination should allow for quick dexterity when needed, breathability, windproof and of course warm in wet conditions. The open palm mitts gives you better grip on the pole and when you need your fingertips you just pull them over your fingers. I have used these in the autumn so far but have yet to test in combination with the merino wool gloves in the really cold weather.
