Busted an SLX Today

Busted my SLX18 today. Totally my fault.

I normally crack my gooseneck valve by hand before I start using it as it sticks when stored overnite. After that it's fine all day. Forgot to crack it this morning.

First window of the day. Went to operate gooseneck valve with pole 3/4 extended and it wouldn't turn on. So instead of bringing it down to crack it I leaned on the pole to hold the brush down while twisting and snapped the no3 section. Well surprised as it's the no.s 1&2 sections are the most worn. First carbon pole I've busted.

So I've ordered me an Extreme 22 to give me a bit more reach. Think I'll fit it with a Univalve. :laugh::laugh:

 
You was only talking about the extreme the other what a coincidence bad luck on the slx but at least it made your mind up for you.

As I say 'twas totally my fault. I got off to a good start this morning which was then wasted in an annoying traffic queue. Then had trouble finding somewhere to park due to nuisance parking caused by the Christmas rush. People not wanting to pay for parking in town and clogging the streets instead. So by the time I got started I wasn't in a good frame of mind. So whereas I'm normally quite steady, I was eager to make up lost time. Ended up rushing and wasting more time instead. That'll teach me. Fortunately I had the 25 in the car. So didn't have to go back home. But as you say it made me press the buy button. I will get the replacement section for the 18 in time, when I've recovered from the shock of spending £500 on a new pole. Can't wait to try it now. Alex reckons the Gooseneck works with the Extremes but I'm not sure after today.

i've not tried the goosneck valve mark,one morning with the original tap put me off,i have two extremes running univalves and they work perfectly,you'll like the extreme a lot less flex than the slx

Sometimes the inside of the No.3 section can be the most worn where the No.2 section slides inside of it all the time. Might not look it on the outside though.

Looking at the valve, it should not be stiff enough to need a morning 'crack' before work. Have you had a chance to give it a service yet? [media]

Yeah Peter, I may try the Gooseneck valve to see how I get on but I've also got a spare Univalve so if I think it's pushing it a bit I'll fit that instead. I like the two hands on the pole approach to the g'valve but having worked all day with my 25 which has a Univalve fitted I like both taps about as much as each other.

pop your foot on the hose and slighty push the pole upwards-turns the univalve off,

This is a good tip. I've also lately found it slightly quicker when using either valve to fold the hose at the base of the pole when moving from window to window rather than turn the tap off. To open the flow again you just let go the hose.

In one way I'm not surprised as I'm a bit of a naughty boy when it comes to maintaining them. They work so well I tend to follow the old adage 'if it isn't broke don't fix it' with them. They seldom get gritty but when they do that's when I strip them down rather than follow a strict regime of maintenance. Think that'll have to change with the Extreme given the expense though. If it gives me as much of a buzz using it as when I moved from the CLX to the SLX I'll be happy.

Unfortunately you can't stand on Extremes they snap closing windows.

 
Section 1 seems more robust than other sections on my Series II Xtreme at just under 12 months old section 3 was the first to snap at the top of the section which was replaced under warranty then just over a week ago section 2 to be exact started flexing in exactly the same area which will result in it snapping .

Yesterday my brand new SLX-22 arrived so I have decided to mix intact sections of my Xtreme & SLX to make up my usual daily pole lets see how it goes .

 
Unfortunately you can't stand on Extremes they snap closing windows.
That is why you turn it upside down extended a bit but not no1 section if possible and use the endcap to push the window shut or sash window upwards

No chance of breaking then

 
Snapped section #3 on my SLX-22 today. Luckily I had my SLX-35 on board and finished off by using section #3 from that. About 6" too long but it got me through the afternoon.
