I bought a hotwater system from Grippatank for £10k. The diesel heater frost stat comes on when the water temperature reaches 1 degree. Not had any problems with the system now that I have had it 3 years. It costs £600 a year to service my system, webasto plug, grating, resin, and carbon filter. Oliver checks over the system while he is here. I believe its worth it.

I have a 9 kw wabasto add on boiler on one of my vans with frost stat works fine ( Grippatank). Think it kicks in when water temperature is 2 degrees, runs fir a few muinits to circulate water and stop freezing , I would recommend it very good .

Wouldn't bother unless you live in the North Pole. A heating element is far more cost effective, unless you're doing filthy windows week in week out.

You have to activate it to work I would imagine.

I've turned my frost stat off on my hot water system as my temperature probe isn't working again,I just put an oil filled radiator in the back now on cold nights....

Remember if you have frost stat you need to have your batteries on charge too so you need to be able to run an extension cable to your van every night....also the heater will be quite loud in the dead of night when it kicks in so it could wake/startle your neighbours...mine used to kick in every hour or so on very cold nights....it also uses diesel so make sure you have plenty in your tank....

The diesel hose for heater goes into van's fuel tank But a quarter above bottom. Just found out why my heater cuts off after 4hrs when I'm running low of juice. Batteries need to be top up because that can deactivate the diesel heater as well. Slowly but surly I'm beginning to notice patterns emerging.

i bought a pre loved streamline heater with the froststat fitted and the first thing i did was rip it out peter, its old technology where there are many better options to keep the water from freezing overnight, by the way why do you feel you need hot water? i'm just curious by the way as your question seems to be more based on the froststat part of having hot water

regards kevin

Never ever let your diesel tank get below a quarter full...I was told this the day grippatank fitted my heater so I always fill up when I get to a quarter full...

My heater has never cut out in over 4 years due to low fuel or low batteries

I've got a facelift system fitted. Gets nice and hot and frost stat has worked so far so good through this winter. Not had a frozen pipe or water yet overnight. I never hear it kick in but it must work because the pipes and reel has never frozen and the water always reads 3 degrees or above on a morning.

Cost me about £4.5k to buy and when I asked about servicing they said it didn't need it as there is nothing to service in this system.

It'll need a new burner and glow pin after around 3 years....mine did anyway...I got a webasto service engineer at a boatyard to change it,cost me £400 including parts and labour ....I've still got the old burner and it was seriously coked up!

Mine was changed after 6 years with over 12,000 hours run time never had a service before . Mine didn’t have any coke in it but was badly distorted by the constant heat

if i remember rightly daz, the engineer found a hose that was kinked/bent when it was serviced?.

Any of the spring (rebadged) controllers can have the frost stat ‘feature’ added to them. I’ve recently re-fitted my webasto for that specific reason as I’m still waiting for my house electrics to be sorted (to run my immersion). The temperature at which it kicks in is fully adjustable - from 2 degrees and above anyway - and you pre-set the speed at which your pump circulates the water. You just have to remember to connect the return circuit to your tank. I’ve installed a rectus male fitting to a spare lid on my tank - I connect the hose reel to it every night so if the temperature hits 2 degrees or below the pump kicks in, the heater activates and it preheats the system. Even if the heater fails to start its nice to have the water circulating as it stops the hose reel freezing up. I’ve lost two days work this year from frozen hoses so they are well worth it in my opinion. We’ve had four frosts since and my system hasn’t frozen.
