if i remember rightly daz, the engineer found a hose that was kinked/bent when it was serviced?.
Yes that's true mate.he altered the pipework a bit...hopefully that was the reason the burner coked up prematurely but according to Oliver at grippatank the burner on these heaters should be changed every year which seems like overkill to me and a waste of money and parts

Exactly changed every year lol that’s ridiculous talking to ones that have them on boats and running huge hours only change them on average every 3-5 years, provided they haven’t been run on poor quality red .

i take it that you took that issue up with oliver daz?, it does seem overkill/get out clause to me, i can't get my head round why a boiler needs a service every year-i really can't, the general opinion is when it breaks just replace the part thats broken, ok i admit at some point a good clean out and de-coke will be on the cards but not a burner every year thats just a de-coke not a new one at worst.

maybe daz, you've been told wrongly if not, the web  would be full of having to change burners yearly and how costly it is to run a heater, think you've been grippa scammed.

i'd be using indipendant webasto engineers from now on and local to you if possible,.

That’s the instructions Grippatank give ones if you don’t have an annual service they won’t give you the warranty, I have spoken to wabasto s head office and they told me they don’t need servicing only replace the burner and pin when they start to smoke . Mine did over  12,000 hours run time before it went wrong and needed a new burner and screen and pin , the one I had off you is still going strong no issues at all and that’s running 8 hours a day 5 days a week since I had it off you . All this servicing may be good for  preventing failure but after 6 years two days off the road getting parts and replacing it Ime more than happy with that . No wabasto service centres I have spoken to recommended having them serviced they said they either work or they don’t and I have phoned at least 6 different ones just to make sure what I was being told was true , they could have easily said yes it needs servicing and charged me a load of money for doing it but they didn't that tells me a lot .

the one you bought off me paul was a trade in via steve scargill. when i had it fitted both he and the guy who builds the hot water products  for ionics was there (on his day off) they were both suprised at how quickly yours worked he re-worked the wiring as it had been messed around with, you have a good one there, should be going for years to come without any need for servicing.

off topic maybe but i think the yearly servicing option from grippa is more of an add on revenue on there part, for me i add a bit of deisel fuel cleaner to the tank every once in while, it seems to do a good job no way of knowing if i'm honest as it just keeps on working.

I don't have any issue with Grippatank servicing my system. Receive new Fibredyne filter, resin and Oliver services the Webasto heater. Around £600 which I'm very happy with. They are always on the end of the line if I need technical support. When running a professional business you have got to have the support in place to flourish. Its all about supplying a reliable service and my number one rule which is on my van. ?

No I didn't contact Oliver.....my burner replacement and pipe alteration was done by a webasto engineer at a boatyard in Middlewich after 3 years of trouble free operation.....I didn't take Olivers advice to get it serviced every year...

There not just a the end of the phone. The calls get picked up by someone who answers the phone and 9/10 times he dosn't have or know the answer and can take hours to get back to you with it.

£600 is a lot of money to service a heater when you think your van probably wouldn't cost half that to service from a VW main dealer.

I like Grippa but they like to extract as much money out of their customers as possible.

They even do a cold water system service which says it all really.

Well I get a door step service and I think its well worth the money. I can make a grand a week cleaning windows so I'm not going down the penny wise pound foolish route. I service my van myself and maybe in the future if I could go on a webasto service course then I could do mine myself. In an attic all day fitting a door and laying a bit of flooring for 200 but I would rather been out cleaning windows. All day all I seemed to do was hit my head off of the rafters. ? Don't realise how easy window cleaning is till you do other work that's why I like to maintain the system and van to keep it going. I spend over two grand advertising so I'm happy with the £600 to service my system. The advertising will have to go soon because my handyman mate has retired and I'm getting all his work now.

Why oh why when you have spent 10k on window cleaning kit do you do all theses other pointless jobs focus on window cleaning

Some of my customers I used to work for know I can do it. The other thing is variety is the spice of life, I like to challenge myself. Only takes 2 weeks to complete all my window cleaning customers which leaves me 2 weeks to tackle other jobs. It seems I get asked to do all the tricky stuff that no one wants to do. On the downward slope now with my work because I have bought everything I want and will be ditching the advertising soon. Only thing I would like is a 22 plate van but will see how it goes.

So after saying mine is 11 months in and going well I've now hit an issue. It turns itself off about 3 times a day and only comes back on when I turn it off and on again. Spoke to WCW who arranged for me to go to a Webasto engineer nearby. Put it on the diagnostics and it was reading exhaust gas sensor reading too hot which is causing it to turn off. He thinks it will need a new burner and pin and a good clean down to decarbonise it all. Good news is it's all under warranty. But should have been £460. The Webasto guy said if I use it 5 days a week all year I will need the burner and pin changed every year. He said that's classed as heavy usage on these heaters. Seems quite poor to me on a unit that costs a few thousand pounds.

Mine did over 12,000 hours run time before it started chuffing out white smoke and then it needed burner , pin,  screen , I have two others that have done similar hours and are still going strong at the moment , yearly replacement is a load of rubbish ours all run 8 hours a day 5 days a week and mine was fine for over 6 years . They are a very good heater there was very little carbon on mine but the burner housing was deformed from the constant high temperature, but after 6 years I was more than happy to replace it .

Do you use branded diesel or supermarket type stuff?

Usually texaco ,  rarely use supermarket fuels I know it’s a controversial subject but Ime convinced super market fuel wrecked my injectors in one of my vans that’s what the guy at the fuel injection place said their fuel doesn’t have the same additives , and detergents in it . Since I have stopped using it not had any issues since . I do occasionally put a fuel addertive in the vehicle fuel tank that obviously also goes into the wabasto heater but not very often

I also know supermarket fuel is a contentious issue. What I do know is that the oil companies are very good at just passing specs. While supermarket fuels will pass the specs the manufacturers might add more detergents or other 'stuff' to their own pump fuels.

Then again I also remember 'Formula Shell' and the damage that unleaded fuel did just to make Shell a few more £ in lower duty!

Put 130k miles on the Vivaro using mainly Morrisons fuel and had no problems, except known injector fault. Got 45k on the Ducato, touch wood fine. Personally think it's a scare story from the oil companies trying  to get people to pay their higher prices.

As I said it’s a controversial subject but that’s what the guy from the fuel injection specialist said , and since I have stopped using Tesco and Asda fuel had no more issues, so don’t know if it’s true or just coincidence.

I put a few cans of Catclean in my diesel before Mot and take it a long drive down the motorway. My DPF light hasn't came on since I started doing it. At same time I put 5 miracle pills in Fuel Tank that Mike Brewer advertises. Not sure how they work but my DPF light hasn't came on since I did it. ?

I would say that supermarket fuels all pass their specs but the oil companies 'premium' versions (like Supreme / Ultimate / V power) will have more/better additive packages in them. I would say the month before MoT time it might be worth running a tank of the more premium fuels in to clean things up a little.

I do know that when Proton were manufacturing their cars in Malaysia their local petrol was so poor 'quality' that the engines destined for European market wouldn't run!!! It was due to European fuels being a much higher Octane or Cetain rating and the ECU maps being designed and tested with UK fuels and to EU emission regs. They had to send an engineer out to tweak the engine map so they could drive them onto the ships!

Fuels can and do vary and in my opinion supermarket fuels will be up to spec so should be fine, but running a tank of premium once in a while should be good for the systems.

A TV program did a test on all fuel and said you would need a Ferrari engine to make a difference with premium fuel and supermarket fuel was exactly the same as oil companies fuel. Paying to get an old engine decarbonised would make a difference. As I said I put 6 fuel pellets in my tank a year ago and my DPF light hasn't come on since then. Maybe they do work after all.
