A TV program did a test on all fuel and said you would need a Ferrari engine to make a difference with premium fuel and supermarket fuel was exactly the same as oil companies fuel. Paying to get an old engine decarbonised would make a difference. As I said I put 6 fuel pellets in my tank a year ago and my DPF light hasn't come on since then. Maybe they do work after all.
Just because they showed something on a TV program doesn't make it true! It all depends on what they were looking for. i.e. the 'Super' fuels have higher Octane or Cetain ratings, this basically means you can extract higher cylinder pressures before you get predetonation (knock), running higher pressures can give more power. We are not talking 20 or 30% difference but maybe 1 or 2% so it's not very noticeable.

To actually assess the detergents in the fuel you would have to run 5 brand new lab quality test engines, run tests to a spec and have a qualified engineer assess the components after test. Components include pistons, rings, valves, bearings to name but a few things, then there is the pre and post chemical analysis of the fuel and lubricants.

I very much doubt a TV company would commission about 5 weeks worth of tests on lab test engines.

'Basic fuels' in supermarkets and oil companies will be very very similar it's the 'premium' branded fuels that have more/better additive packages in.

I certainly know that many Citroen driver's experienced issues with Morrison's diesel. The inline fuel sensor determined the fuel wasn't up to scratch and kicked the car into limp home mode. Citroen probably reprogrammed the sensor to accept that fuel as the issue kind of disappeared.

We have the notorious Saltburn bank in Saltburn. Whenever my 2.0hdi van had Morrisons fuel in it, that became a 1st gear hill with 1/2 a tank of water onboard. With Shell it tacked that hill in second.

Morrisons fuel delivered 22 MPG where ordinary Shell delivered 28mpg on the round. We experimented with this over many years. My son found the same with his 2.0hdi Peugeot Partner van. Fuel consumption increased with Morrisons fuel. The fuel cost savings didn't compensate for the lower miles per gallon.

Always good to read personal experience.

My experience was Lab testing so might be a bit too clinical.
