Ladder feet

WCF

Help Support WCF:

i only use it for trad as i now have a ankalad for my 3 tear wich is the bees nees takes a bit longer to set up so not idel for trad but the wcw stabliser is very quick indeed u can have any feet on ur ladder when u use it:)

about 4 yrs ago on a day out up the coast i happened on a trad window cleaner with a small wooden device fitted near the top of his ladder. it was what i can only describe as a small ladder stand off . it was no wider than the ladder stiles and only about 6 -8 inches deep. somehow it slid up and down the stiles as if on rails ,for adjustment . i WISH now id taken more of a look . i think this simple homemade device probably hooked over the top face of a window sill , thereby preventing any slip risk , to either side, or from the feet

Probably because they work better than plastic tyres @Tuffers

Needless to say don't assume rubber feet on ladders or using rubbers mats etc will work as well as tyres as they don't on slippery surfaces as many have found out the hard way.

i use the wcw foot the ladder for trad wrk quick an easy to set up an no bother to carry around or have in the van here is a pic of it in action on slipry painted stone covered in soapy water

Good bit of kit it seems:)

more i think about it ,the more angry i get about folk peddling rubber feet or rubber mats to our trade.lives are on the line here

theres really only one big seller far as i can see (the guy behind laddermat] selling Laddermat [rubber mats] and cut to fit rubber feet thru all the window cleaning supply firms

he actually lives in my town too ! [was a former window cleaner] . the supply firms are obviously unaware how dangerous the product of rubber is

but the maker IS aware - i know others have told him ,and he re-edited his online promo video to remove him saying its very good to use on smooth surfaces.

here he is in action www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWreGZXLoB4 at towards end of vid he is using it on a smooth surface, but has removed his speech at this point saying "its good on smooth" . this was the same surface i fell on. note how he is "trying" to get the ladder to slip ,to prove how good it is ,BUT he is doing it from ground level, totally different from when you are at the top of the ladder . its a false test

he really sounds convincing doesnt he !

but as some of us have learned to our cost, rubber is lethal on ladders

I use the same to level the my gutter clearing ladder setup on sloping/uneven slippery be it dry or slippery wet surfaces as the ladder I use has a stabalising bar at the bottom of the ladder so is a bit more awkward to use. Mind you my ladder is not going to go anywhere as I also use an ankalad & mirolite standoff on my ladder aswell./emoticons/smile.png

Just using the feet of any ladder be it plastic or rubber to rely on grip when not footed or without using a good ladder safety device is asking for trouble if you ask me.

Sorry to hear about your fall @boarcity

Good video he does look a bit apprehensive, but device works a treat:)

Its a shame it doesnt have a retractor spring lock action or something so after using it, its flat against ladder for movin it about. But looks like a life saver:)

I do have laddermats n i do like them when the ground is unlevel so they do have their place i think, also on e.g. in soft ground. But as discussed in this thread they should not be relied on when surface wet n slippery.

To add little fuel to this fire, I've made a little observation today. I tried the ladder mats out with my window cleaning ladder and the feet are about an inch away from the outside edge of each mat which is not too good considering they are meant to be made for window cleaners by window cleaners. That said, I couldn't be without my mats, but its important not to rely on any one piece of safety equipment, as they all have drawbacks, even the ankalad. best to have a few different methods, so you can pick the most appropriate for the situation.

Yep thats the thing there are many variables from one window to another, a big heavy flower pot in the way for the foot the ladder device, do you just chance it, without it, maybe the ankalad would be better in that situation. comes down to cost n maybe space in the car. Not so bad if you work with others aswell as they can foot it.

However in saying that, a friend said to me that he went up ladder on i think wet deckin, his boss footed it n the ladder slid back pushing the footer back n he ended up holding onto the gutter n managed to get down without injury, but close one.
