Hi Guys,

One of my employees has expressed an interest in going out on his own.

He will be 18 with less than a years driving experience.

I’m getting prices of around £4500-£5500 for small vans and even CD vans.

Apart from having him as the main named driver and the policy in my name is there anything I can do?

I think this will be the same for anyone under 25 , I had a lad several years ago early twenties and they wanted 2.5k and think it was 1 k excess on any claim , I didn’t go ahead with it in the end he worked with one of my guys but didn’t drive the vans

My van cost £300 ish a year with my wife as a named driver also lol
Perks of being old

I’m 25. I’ve just renewed mine last week. 18 plate Peugeot Expect, 3 years no claims, 2 accidents in past 5 years. Ionics system tank, sign writing and other modifications.
£475, and that’s after I put my yearly mileage up (10k). Originally it was £450.

I’m with Admiral but we have multicover for my mum’s car also (and the house). It really pays to shop around, though I was told by a broker that they hadn’t been able to beat Admiral this year for anyone. Another broker proved this when he came back of a quote of £1,500 for my van. I’ve also had good experience with Adrian Flux, though never got a chance to get a quote with them this year.

I'm 25 (as of yesterday) and pay £2500 a year for my Renault Trafic, I have a Grippatank system and live in a rural area where my van is parked off road so I imagine it would be higher if the system isn't professionally installed and if it's in a city but I could be well off as they seem to pluck figures from thin air
Mate that is insane! 100% shop about. See my post above about my renewal!

Is the van in your name or his? I think that makes a big difference. If it’s his own van they view you as being more responsible with it I believe.

I just changed to multi car with admiral as my wife and son were on it anyway but I had a separate policy with them as I didn’t think you could add business cover on multi car.
I saved £80 and went to £220 but then the 3 points I just got for overtaking a slow car on the wrong side of a mini roundabout (cd10) added it back to £300 again lol.
Bloody slow old people with dashcams you need to watch out.
With my sp30 that makes 6 points?

So wait did the police catch you or did he send in the footage to them?!

Interesting I have two separate policies home and car been one then the van Admiral never mentioned anything but I'll ask at the point of renewal

For sure! Whatever renews first tell them and then when the next one comes up add to same policy. The discounts really add up!

Edit: I think the reason I get my van so cheap is cause it was the first vehicle, and so all the discounts go onto it ?

I’m surprised the police convicted. Especially because they couldn’t see the entire situation. I’m all for dashcams, have them myself, but for your own protection in a accident.
Driving the wrong side of a roundabout, even mini roundabouts, is an endorsable offence. Technically speaking even driving over the top of one is as you're failing to comply with a traffic / road sign

If it’s raised you are supposed to drive round it but a painted spot can be driven over .
That's what I thought. I remember way back from a driving lesson the instructor having a go at me for driving over a painted one and I replied that he had told me I was allowed to drive over painted ones! Then again that was going back over 30 years, so things do change.
