it takes a while for your eyes to adjust to be able to focus only on the outside surface of the glass Scottie. but thatll happen once u hit the streets . and dont worry too much about how much rubber hangs out end of squeegee, iv seen my workers have loads hang out but long as the windows come up good who cares . theres no right and wrong in this trade, i know a windie who uses just 2 rags,no squeegee at all.

he wanted to come work for me,asked for a job -but only if id come work for him too- whats that all about ???

Also does anyone know where you can buy one from and if there are any good deals on the go? I dont want to buy from ebay I do not trust them at all.

Ebay doesn't sell anything it is a market place, but it is probably the safest place to shop on the whole internet to be honest, if you have any issues, you get your money back.

Can you use a stopper and a foot the ladder? Whats best in the winter put ladder feet on to some rubber ant slips mats? and then fit foot the ladder? does it still work or does the feet from ladder have to be on ground or does those few inches mean somthing? Basically with foot the ladder its very unlikley you will slip back at all. Just sideways is an issue, a stand off should assist with this and make more sturdee? Thank you for the links guts. The ladder m8rix is looking good.

Is there a decent size mat with like rubber on bottom any of ou recommed? I no a guy whom does our windows uses a mat with anti slip under it and puts ladders on that in the ice last year. just want somthing for ladders to be on as well as use the foot the ladder, so I no its real safe. or would I not need it

dont ever use anything rubber outdoors scottie. i did, and my ladder slid out when i was at the top of it working and i fell the full drop , about 4 yrs ago. what an awful day that was. rubber has no grip when its outdoors- i learnt the hard way

later i read on a forum about ladder spikes ,these are very good ,all year round ,especially in wintertime

yeah use one of these as long as ground is levelish these are great bit of kit

Whats foot the ladder like on grass or other floors? Anyone know. It seems the best kit about for sliding out. The M8trix thign looks good is thata rubber base? wont that slip then with weight when your on ladder?

Where to you get the *****? thats an added bonus, might look into them.

So any of you just use ladder and feet and thats it? I just assume they could slip out any time. The stand off is a usefull tool, that looks to me as it can give a bit more stability as its got rubber grips for wall, not sure what extra safty it provides, but looks like it provides more safty. I will know the runner mats on head then. Dont no what to get then as foot the ladder may not always be used in certain situations, whats the alternative. just bugs me the sliding out thing and jst want some safty features in place really. If the lader is angled right though you should not slip really anyway.

Just wonder how the foot the ladder works on grass etc....must be same principle?

I think I am going to buy this, tryign to find a place local or a street shop I can walk into and buy it rather than offline. Anyone know any shops that sell the ladder m8rix. /emoticons/smile.png

Like any ladder safety devices they have limitations to what the can actually do. Using a product that so say just helps to stop the ladder slipping backwards is not enough in my book especially for me when doing roofline work.

I will just need to get to the bedroom upstair windows thats it for me. So that bit of kit will prob do me just fine, but yeah roof work etc is alot higher and more demand. Also that angle 76degrees, where do you get that from, thats good to.

Smurf just out of interest, what it like going from normal 2nd floor windows cleaning to then going right up to the rooline? I take it at first it must be like tripple the scare of 2nd floor as your feet are well below the window anyway. I just dont think I would be able to do roofline work, make you think thats why people should pay good money for roofline work to be done, its money well earnt in my mind. Cheers

I go to roofline when clearing gutters and checking downpipes etc, no real difference to going to a bedroom window, just you climb a bit higher lol

thats why i prefer having a set of spikes fixed permanently to my ladder-they cannot be forgotten . the spikes i use are no longer on sale [hailo make] but a few other ladder firms sell spikes and on ebay too . ladder spikes are the cheapest option too , you could even make your own pucca set ,in a couple of hours easily, from steel strip

Your right, never see these on sale. I thought screwfix may have them, but no. I think I will get the M8trix and go with a stand off and learn to position the ladder correct and study it all hard, I think the m8trix is good for 2nd floor cleaning, its high but not over high and should be a good addition for me, being new and that, not as confident as you guys. Just not sure what one is best, i think the professsioanl one is the one as it has the spikes on bottom and rubber on top, dont want the other one with rubber on bottom, I dont like rubber idea on floor contact to much after reading what you said boarcity.

Mind you watching our windy other day, wow, broken feet and laddr bottom moved side to side as was not same feet one broke and one off completly, scratched decking it did. also the stand off was weld back on, lol. if he is doing it on that i think m8trix and a decent stand off should do me well. I need to upload a pic of our windows after he has been, omg, worse than before he came, lol. I can do my own now, woop! /emoticons/smile.png

Spikes are a good idea but i use a ankalad when i am worried about ladder slipping

Spikes or not some positions you put the

ladder in it isn't safe without it

Also Smurf gave me the tip you can use ladder Mats to level ladder even in the wet if using Ankalad Also as it stops the ladder slipping

Has helped me at a few jobs i do

Doesn't matter what height you are working at on ladders as it's the sudden stop at the end of a free fall that hurts like hell.

We all can make mistakes and it seems to me the main killer is where the ladder moves suddenly (slips sideways) at the top which can be caused by overreaching, resting the top of the ladder on surfaces that give way and/or stepping on/off the ladder onto pitched or flat roof as a few examples. So just using a device/method to stop backward slip is only part of the bigger picture really. Many situations will occur when you may need to set the ladder on uneven or slightly slopping ground so you need to consider what device will work best for that task too.

Like I say no one has come up with the ultimate all round ladder safety device yet without drilling holes in walls and using a ladder fall arrest system but I have found an ankalad & microlite standoff combination comes close. I don't do alot of trad ladder window cleaning with multi ladder sets but my ladder setup works very well for me in a multitude of tasks I need it for. Also can be used as a free standing ladder too if need be.

Tbh smurf i feel.a.lot safer after 23 years with no safety equipment using the ankalad

The microlite made it even more safer in my opinion

The fear of falling is a reality for me so I always try me best to make sure if using ladders they are as secure as they can be.

Yes it takes slightly longer to set the ladder with an ankalad properly but at least I know it's not going to go anywhere. As for using a microlite standoff aswell it's a must for roofline work as makes the job so much easier & safer to do by having the ladder higher than the guttering.

If you have not seen an ankalad before or a microlite standoff this is what they look like.

As you can see from the pic it would have been very doggy to try getting to that blocked downspout & guttering without using that combination on my ladders.
