Window Cleaner Falls To Death

WCF

Help Support WCF:

wot can i say while he does windows over porches and canopies with the ladder only resting on the guttering and him and the top of the ladder in mid air.

Personally I don't think it sounds like a window cleaning accident cos he was obviously ill before he even went up there and it's only speculation about what he was doing.

how ever u dress it up he wos window cleaning on ladders so yes it wos a window cleaning insedent .or do u think he wos trying to fly ,the wife got this moorning ul say any thing to justyfi your use of laders and wont lisen to any thining

ladders are not the problem, ladder are 100% safe, if used the right way and by the right perosn. ladders are only a problem when people mis-use them. i dont think they should be banned. but i think everyone that uses a ladder has to be trained on them and carry a card to say that they have been traind
Couldn't agree more, Its this kind of publicity that's bad for traditional window cleaners. Its just common sense.

Daley, I think I know you on another forum under a different name, and as such have read quite a lot of good and helpful posts, and your blunt way of putting things often makes me smile. And while I agree with a fair amount of your reasoning here, ie I think we should all be looking to use ladders as little as possible, an unexpected gust of wind has nearly seen me off a few times! And whether ladders are safe in themselves or not I think is debatable, but complacency gets the better of all of us, after all you can't afford to spend long worrying about the best foothold spot and whether it's at 1-4 angle. But it's not right to call trad Windys stupid, these are guys just trying to earn a living, and rightly or wrongly some don't like the thought of wfp, old habits die hard and of course they may worry about customers not liking it, and it has to be said, quite a few don't. I've never been on ciu but know it by reputation, and can honestly say this forum isn't like that, people speak freely, may disagree about one or two things, but they get on, have a bit of banter and no one is pressured to like a particular company because they sponsor the site or anything like that. To that end, I would urge you to rescind your statements about trad being stupid and this being like ciu. ( I'm not a mod here by the way, not popular enough!) after all, as rc says, a man has died trying to earn a living for his family, and has probably worked when he shouldn't have cos he needed the money. As I said at the start, I like your posts, think you have a good knowledge of the trade we do, and for one don't want you to leave this forum.

iv lost count of thous whos fallen off and diyed or not worked agane or bolted back too gether ,so yes dumys ,
It's a desperate shame when anyone loses their life in the course of providing for their loved ones. Thinking of the family right now.

I do take issue with daley's comment. I've been doing this job for 16 years now and have dozens of personal friends plus other window cleaners I know, and of all these I know of only 2 falls from ladders with injuries. No deaths. 1 of these was some 25 years ago. Maybe I only know careful window cleaners....

I recall the big furore over ladders some years ago and the HSE made some comment about "between 4 and 7 window cleaners die each year in falls from ladders". Now I personally don't think thats very accurate statistics. Is it 5 or 6? Maybe they could have worked out an average? Either way, we are talking about deaths and serious injuries. Please be careful.

Have you ever tried to hire a chainsaw? Unless you've got a certificate and the proper clothing you probably won't be able to. I saw a couple of SKY installers today. They looked like they were going up the Matterhorn!! Helmets, ropes, goggles and ladders and ladder rack that was out of this world!! They take safety really seriously. Perhaps window cleaners may be forced down a similar route.

Keep it safe. Don't take risks.

ps I went wfp last year. However my 16 year old son is learning ladder work these last couple of weeks. ok so far.

If I remember correctly Sky wasent always like this I do beleive there was a case some years a ago when H&S wasent so bad.
