Question..

my mate has started a small run bringing in £130 - 160 pm on top of his pt job only earning like £500 pm he doesn’t plan to build or earn more . . But should he still apply for Window Cleaning license at a low income? Or could he get away with no license? .. Kilmarnock. thanks

Regardless of amount he needs a license unfortunately.

It will probably cost about £100 for a three year license so hardly breaking the bank. Still a pain though.

No insurance . What is the most thing would happen to him if no license. Can he lose his van & water system equipment? Or just get a heavy fine ? Has anyone actually been pulled up on the streets or is it a threat ? He works only for him self 1or 2 days a month but I told him to see about the license. Cheers

I would say the worst part is no insurance.

Yes heavy fine, potential of a criminal record, no chance of him getting a license in the future etc etc.

Generally he should get a warning first. (I did when I first started) but is it really worth the risk?

Ive been stopped twice and asked to produce my license in 8 years.

The biggest risk he’s running is hurting someone with his ladder or hose, and them taking him to court. Without any insurance that could be massive.

Its all the “what ifs” but is it really worth the risk for a few hundred quid?

You seem to be asking some vital questions for a mate [emoji57], Bottom line if some one can spend £1,000s on a van and system but can't be bothered to spend less than £100 on £1 million Public Liability insurance and £200 on a legally required licence,

then hopefully he will get caught, boils my pee that people deem it acceptable to break the law whilst professionals do it by the book.

Trouble is people like this no insurance and no licence probably working cash in hand working cheap ruin it for legitimate business that do have insurance and licence and other expenses, these people should have the book thrown at them as far as ime conserned heavy fines and named and shamed in the local press  , if you are going to run a business do it properly

Insurance he agreed on but a license to wash a window ?..  Anyway what does he need to do to apply for a license ? & do you just apply & pay the fee ?  , then get some kind of badge & that’s it for 3 years.. no records or paper work ? As he doesn’t earn much from it . Does this go through checks , what are the checks. Does your details get passed on ? .. He’s doing it on Friday like everybody else..

As far as I am aware, the license requires a criminal background check and public liability insurance inspection. He will also need 2 passport photos for the license itself. Info can be found on the .gov website. Just google ‘Scottish Window Cleaning license’ and you should be able to find what you need!

Why hasn’t he looked into this himself and you have done it for him? He is the one that is liable at the end of the day. Starting a business requires plenty of research and this should be something at the top of his agenda before touching a customers home... if he gets caught between now and being issued a license it’s unlikely he will be issued with one any time soon...

So Friday your going? ?

full background checks, disclosure scotland, checks to see if you have valid public liability insurance, and also checks to see if your claiming benefits too.

He still reliable to claim housing benefits cause he’s on a low wage of something like £500 too.. but probably be less benefited for his home . So he will be letting them know When applying to them . Then he’s on his own .
