Haven't heard that one, there's nothing extra to operate all councils have a licensing dept because clubs bars taxi drivers etc all need licenses so cant see the extra operation needed for a window cleaner!! I can honestly say out of all my years operating only 1 policeman has asked to see my licence and that was only because he was a new community officer wanting his presence known havnt seen him since right enough. If it was policed properly I would feel better about paying for it. Doug Akinson made an impact challenging councils to police it properly but not a high priority for the police I don't think. But my understanding is some councils in Scotland you don't need a lic as they can't afford to operate it so puts a big mockery of the whole idea that everyone that is a window cleaner has to have a lic.
I'm sort of with you on that mate, but I just don't think we should have to pay for it, (I realise that it would then have to come out of the public purse). I just hate the thought of some council knobhead sat behind a desk charging me money just because I want to go and earn a living.I know every time this is mentioned it throws some up but I for one really wish window cleaners had to be licenced in England (Britain). I don't wish for extra outgoings and certainly do not want to take away the chance for a person to start again in life, I just feel it will bring a bit of professional control over our trade. Who should run it and police it? Not sure!
The £250 level is only for the big boys - the £50 level is what most would choose.
I'm not involved in running the Guild anymore, but I still look after their website and I will say that at least twice a month on average I'm asked to add a new benefit to the member resources page,... and on top of that the exposure you get just from being in the directory (the Guild website has always had amazing Google rankings) should get you more than enough work to cover the membership fee,...
How can a council opt out if its the law that's what I cant understand and it needs to be enforced by the councils and police I would think, the police are the law enforcers and the ones that are more likely to see a window cleaner. Police pass me every yet I've only been asked once for my license. It is not the police but councils that have to inforce it that is why some have opted out
Nat could you please tell me what you get for £50 as I mentioned before every thing is available free on the internet that the guild offers just asking for loads of things just one will do
