Understanding which brush, which job.

This is something that seems to be nothing more than a matter of personal choice for most of us.

As for me, I use what came with the pole, not really understanding the different applications of the different brushes.

With my current brushes I find my self often changing the angles of the brush head to give the sills on a first clean a better scrub but would I not solve this by buying a sill brush instead?

(Previous question based on the fact that 90% of my work is typical residential double glazed housing.

Just looking at Gardiners site and in the Super-Lite brushes alone we have a choice of: Medium mixed bristles - Flocked Bristles - Stiff Bristles - medium mixed bristles - Splay flocked bristles.

Can anyone explain the actual practical application difference? I'm sure someone could enlighten myself and some others here, perhaps a word from @Alex Gardiner himself.

It's often baffled me as well green, the thing that I never understood was flocked vs unflocked,

Flocked is a lot softer but imo cleans better

All the bristle ends are split into loads of smaller bristles

My xline and vikan brushes are both flocked and clean brilliantly

I would rather use flocked on the leaded jobs I do rather than mono as less chance of damage

A lot of the differences in brushes are to match personal taste of how the user likes the brush to feel on the glass.

Generally speaking this is what the following types are good for:

Stiff brushes - these are good for hot water systems or for non-window cleaning applications where an aggressive tougher bristle is required

Medium-mixed brushes - these are a good all round purpose brush which will suit the majority of users and window types. Being mono-filament they are suitable for rinsing on the glass

Flocked brushes - these usually feel softer in the glass and are excellent at cleaning the glass surface with minimal effort. However they do generally need to be used with a rinsing off the glass technique and can feel slightly heavier in use due to the fact they hold onto a little more water

Zero degree splay brushes - these are more specialist brushes which can be good for leaded windows as the bristles flick across the lead without catching. Some users also find them good for deep set sash windows

Sill brushes - these are great for all round cleaning such as gutters/fascias but primarily are useful for being able to clean sills without needing to change gooseneck or pole angle
