My new Gardiner backpack trolley

I've been using my Gardiner backpack for a couple of months now and love it. I've had it strapped to a sack barrow that I found when out working one day. It worked but it didn't look great and was a pain trying to keep the hose tidy. It was a bit tall too so was a pain in the arse getting it in and out of the van. Another problem was that the only hose I was using was the pole hose meaning I could never be too far from the backpack. I needed to upgrade.
Today I took delivery of a new sack barrow and some parts from Gardiner. I picked up a hose reel the other day and already had 30m of micro bore that if bought a while back but never used.

Total cost (excluding the backpack) was around £88. The hose reel was only £6.99 (down from £9.99) in The Range. It won't last forever but at that price I don't mind replacing it every six months or so.

It's not the most exciting thing in the world but I thought I'd share it anyway. It might come in handy for someone.

And thanks to @daveyboy1 for pointing me in the right direction when it came to the adapters and fittings.

daft questions but is it possible to take your backpack off your trolley easily so you could take it indoor to charge the backpack?

i asking cos i live in a flat

Not a daft question mate. It was daft that I didn't give this more consideration before I put it all together.

It'll come off but not quickly or as easily as I might have wanted. I ran the orange hose from the backpack up a length of tubing and cable tied it to the trolley to keep it out of the way and neat. I'd need to cut the cable ties in order to take the backpack off the trolley. I just carry the whole think into my house and charge it in the hallway. Best thing you could do is not cable tie the orange hose to the trolley.

Or add a rectus fitting so you can cable tie it securely but disconnect below it and have a short pipe on it to take in the house

I bought one of those reels it runs free but I find the hose runs loose on the reel when you stop pulling it as it keeps going (a bit of a nightmare ):-(

Yup....the Clabber reel does run smooth and a bit too freely......it needs a little resistance.....

cut a piece of Car Sponge to size required and wrap this in old microfiber cloth or an old sock (stops the sponge disintegrating), cable-tie this between the frame and the reel-side avoiding the plastic lugs :thumbsup:.

I only use mine for going through houses and yeh, they are easy to carry for that purpose

It depends what hose you use

I have the reel @Adams0211 has from the range and have 30m of 11mm od hose and then 30m of 8mm od pole hose and it just fits all on

I've been using £9 Ikea sack trucks for 3 years only had one break and now I've still got 2, always just coiled up hose but bought a reel from The Range today for £13 and I've set it up on the truck with about 30m of pole hose tested outside my house tonight reels in and out well, it's only for experimental work tomorrow got 3 jobs local. Had to re-assemble and place reel on backpack side as it was tipping over when reeling out but sorted now it's fixed with plastic ties it's a bit of a botch but I've just ordered a sack truck off ebay fo less than £30 and I'll do a proper job next week.

hi like your trolley and am new to this after 14 years trad made my trolley the same as yours but was just wondering what fitting have you got inside the hose reel to attach pipe to it

If you look at the one on the outside going to the backpack the one on the inside is the same it's a Hoselock type connector but not actually Hoselock it's for fitting minibore or microbore hose just heat up your minibore in hot water to stretch it on, I've only got about a meter of microbore then it's pole hose all the way connected with an eezi snap connector I'm replacing the main hose with Exceed blue some people have said it effects the flow using thin hose doesn't affect mine. I'll see if I can put a link up later for the connector thonk it's Gardiners.

I connected mine with a hozelock and one of these with pole hose straight to it

HOSELOCK TYPE QUICK RELEASE CONNECTOR PLUG 1/2in 6mm HOSETAIL POLE WFP

Now i have put the same fitting on 30m of microbore and rectus fitting to 30m of pole hose

I did have the reel on the other side but it was unstable much better on the backpack side and no danger of pulling the trolley over. I made up a piece of hose with a female eezi snap connector on to stop the reel leeking in the van it just goes in my pocket when I'm working, instead of fitting a pole tube I added another bungee to the trolley and moved the backpack slightly to one side so the base of the pole has somewhere to stand the pole.
